Practical/useful gifts for LO

The thread about the MIL buying all the Xmas presents (my ILs are similar and it is definitely about control!), got me thinking of what we could ask them to buy LO.

I'm planning on asking for the next car seat. Does anyone have other any ideas? I'd love to give them the 529 account info, but we all know that'd be too good to be true! What are some "necessities" for the 12-18 month range that would be something a grandparent would want to buy?

I'm also thinking a wagon. Can they buy some good quality shoes for walking? Or is that hard to do without LO present? We plan on asking for some type of park/zoo membership also.

  • I'm planning on asking for 2 convertible car seats, shoes in the next size up, and some clothes in 12-18 month sizes. I'm really not sure about toys yet.

  • We asked the grandparents to help pay for continued swim lessons. We specifically said no clothes and no toys.

529s are always good to mention too. My mom said every time she is inclined to buy a toy or clothes for J, she is going to set aside the money for a 529 instead. (She does, however, buy J a lot of books now!)
This is awesome! Can I please introduce your mom to my mom & MIL?!?!

  • I have made a very large (300+ items) wish list on amazon. I all types of things for the next few years of play and learning. This gives the extended family a chance to see what type of toys, and other things we are interested in. I really like that could link things beyond amazon such as a year pass to places around here. I also have a statement talking about our toy philosophy (montisori over made in China battery operated stuff).

I have also talked to family and lamented over how xyz would be really useful. If I say it directly they get all offended, so I have to make it so they think they thought of the idea.

Me too please! I understand babies are fun to buy for, but come on...

Thanks for the great ideas ladies!
  • DH and I are buying LO pretty much all the toys we want for her which isn't much. She will have about 5 presents from us. I have told family and friends to get books and 12-18 month clothing. We have so much from DS that LO plays with so she doesn't need much.
