How many of us...

Have babies that have yet to STTN (8+ hours). DS is teething but even before this he has never STTN. We would get 6-7 hours around 8 weeks but at 4 months, it went downhill and hasn't gotten better. He is up at least 3-4 times in a 12 hour period. I understand it is normal for there to still be a MOTN feeding but this is getting ridiculous. I've created a monster and don't know how to fix it. Anyone else have LOs who have never STTN? Trying to get a feel if this is normal

Re: How many of us...

  • Ours doesn't either. He sleeps in the same room and when he starts to stir in the MOTN I know he is hungry. He takes a nap at 7:30pm but then is down for the count by 10:30pm. He "wakes" to eat between 4-5:30 to eat but never opens his eyes. Then he wakes 2-3 hours later to eat again then back to sleep till about 10:30.

DD still doesn't. We were getting 6-7 with one motn feeding then around 5 months she started giving me nice 2-3 hour stretches. I upped her bedtime bottle to 5 oz last night and she slept from 7:45pm-3am. But very jealous of all the mamas who are getting all the 8-12 hour nights.

  • I read that "sleeping through the night" is medically defined as a 5 hour stretch. Before the 4 MW LO went to bed at 10 pm and slept until 6 am. But we were supplementing so his last bottle was formula, I stopped pumping and am breastfeeding again with no supplementing (he won't even take a bottle when I'm home anymore) and his bedtime is 8 pm. He is up sometime between 2 and 4, and then sleeps until about 7/7:30 am.

He has the odd night once or twice a month where he is up in the MOTN and it takes a while to get him back down, but right now we're finding bedtime more challenging than MOTN wake-ups because he is just hungry at 4 am and falls right back to sleep.

  • I'm lucky to get 3 straight hours.

    I really am considering CIO.

    This.
  • I'm one of the lucky ones who was getting 11 hour stretches from about 3 months. However, these last 2 weeks I feel like we are going backwards. She is suddenly waking between 4-6 am. She'll nurse and go back to sleep but then wake again within an hour. I've been putting her in the swing without nursing her for this wake up and she might get another hour.

Her bedtime was 8:30, and this past week I've changed it to 7:30 in the hopes of settling back to our 11 hour nights. Nope. She's still waking up at the 8 hour mark. At first I thought growth spurt, but going on 2 weeks I'm now thinking habit, and a bad one.

I know I shouldn't be complaining on this thread. I might not even mind if she took decent naps during the day. By her bedtime she is so miserable and tired. I feel like we're caught in a cycle of overtired-ness and I don't know how to break it.

DS is up about 3 times a night.

We CD and I realized that the type I was using was making him feel wet. So we went from 6 to 3 times. I can live with 3 times.

However. DS is an EBF baby and I would worry if he went longer than 6 or 7 hours.

Our challenge is going to be to get him to sleep without nursing to sleep. ETA some form of CIO will be needed. I have noticed that if he cries he needs something. Sometimes he fusses or makes a sqwack or two and I just leave him.
  • J has never slept longer than 5-6 hours.....ever.  Usually it's about 4 hours and he's up.  It's brutal when you have to work the next day!
  • At 3 months DD was doing one 5 hour stretch. Since 3.5 months she's been waking every 1-2hours. The last 3 nights she's actually done 3 hour stretches, yippee!

Maybe teething LB?? I thought we were having issues (struggling to go down and waking twice during the night) due to the time change... Turned out he was teething. As soon as it popped, back to his 11-12 hours.

Why would it worry you? If babe is eating well throughout the day, there is nothing to worry about. Lo is growing like a weed, EBF, and sleeps 11-12 hours for about two months now.

I know LO gets his ounces in at day care from pumped bottles, and when I'm home with him he eats every 3 hours like clock work. He takes 4-5oz a feed. This is easily enough to let him sttn.

  • DS was either giving us the hardest time going to sleep, or would go down easy and within an hour or two would wake and be up for hours screaming & crying. We FF, so I couldnt just pop a bottle in his mouth every time he would wake up in order to calm him down, & he would refuse the paci. On a good night we would get four or five hour stretches.

I read Ferber last weekend and immediately started working on all our bad habits. It took less than a week and bedtime is now something I no longer dread. Within a few days when his sleep had normalized, I started working on weaning him off MOTN feedings. Last night was night two of working on weaning, and DS gave us our first ever eight hour stretch. It was really unexpected and I was so shocked / worried I couldn't sleep myself. Maybe tonight we won't get that same stretch, but I'm confident we're heading in the right direction. Also, DS crying has been virtually nonexistent since we started Ferber last week, a huge bedtime change & a welcomed relief.

Ferber method has also helped us with sleeping longer stretches as well as putting him down with little fuss. He goes down around 6:30 and wakes for one feeding around 1-2 then sleeps until 5-6. We haven't gone there yet with naps though.

I don't know. Her temperament hasn't really changed otherwise and she doesn't necessarily wake up crying like she's in pain. I guess it's a possibility. We have her 6 month appointment on Tuesday so I'm going to ask the pedi for advice either way.

Good idea. Really b had no difference either, just night waking and whimpers in his sleep. That is why I was so shocked to come home to a tooth. No redness, swelling, chewing--- nothing.

  • Oh blissful sleep... LO was sleeping great (and always had). Never through the night completely but 7-7 with 1 MOTN feeding which was maybe 15 min, then back to sleep. Thurs her two bottom teeth cut through and it's been hell since. She is super stuffy, teeth hurt, and randomly decided to prefer her tummy over her back for sleeping. Except once she's on her tummy she wants to complain about it but can't roll back. So she lays awake talking, fussing, sometimes cries FOREVER. the silver lining is even though I was up a lot last night, LO didn't need. MOTN feeding.

This. except only 2 nights with maybe a 3 hour stretch. Apparently I jinxed it by starting to reply last night - she only did 1-2 hour stretches.

Most nights I don't even really know how many times she woke to nurse - it's all one sleepy blur. She is in our bed and I definitely doze off while nursing her. But still its not like proper sleep and I am so tired!! Sometimes wekends are better as she'll sleep in the morning some (so i can too) but not this weekend. And now its time to start the work week. Yay.

She's been underweight from the beginning though so we haven't felt its OK to try to train her away from nursing at night - even if it seemed possible which it doesn't really.

  • No STTN here. Ever. I did get 5 blissful hours once last week, but typically she sleeps for 3 hours at a time.

Except right now. Right now she's up at least once an hour, but we're going to the pedi today for two different potentially sleep impeding issues, so we'll see.
