difficult to count fetal kicks?

This is my first one (i am at 28 weeks) and I feel like it's difficult to distinguish a kick from when the baby is just pressing up against an area sometimes. Or I think I feel a kick but I'm not sure. Is it a must to do the kick counts? He is active more than once through out the day every day so I have no doubt that I would feel a difference if he stopped. Has any one else at 28 weeks found it difficult to count the fetal kicks?

  • Thank you. No my doctor didn't mention it I just read a little too much online, and saw a bunch of literature saying that it's important to do so.

28 weeks is a little early. Did your doctor recommend that you count? If not, hold off, unless you're concerned that your baby is moving less.

  • Discuss with your OB but you don't only count kicks. If you have concerns about decreased movement you count any movement. Unless you know baby's exact position it's hard to distinguish a kick from an elbow etc.

  • According to my OB, ANY movement is considered a "kick": punches, nudges, flutters, even hiccups (although there are varying opinions on this one). Don't get so hung up on the specific movements. As long as your baby moves pretty consistently throughout the day, you're good.

This! Plus just like with anything else baby related the internet will tell you you MUST do something when in reality it's not that important. Just relax.

BeachBum is absolutely right--doesn't need to be a "kick" per se, but count any and all movements! I'm just starting my 33rd week and I've just taken an 'active' hour in the morning and night to count movements; once I hit 10 in that hour (which will happen sooner than you think!), I'm done and all's well. Keep in mind also that once you get further in this trimester, movement will decrease/be less dramatic because with his/her growth, there is less space for baby to move around.
  • Thank you everyone! That answers everything I had a question about.
