I'm going to be helping a friend fix some diapers.  Is there any hook and loop available at Walmart that would work?  Or would I absolutely need to buy a refresher kit?  Being able to buy something readily available would be best.

I would buy from wazoodle or diapersewingsupplies or something. The stuff at walmart isn't usually meant for repeated washing like diapers take.

Yeah, the stuff from diapersewingsupplies.com is much better than what you can find at the store. I believe its a lot cheaper too.

What about the cloth diaper aplix they have at Joanns? Any experience with that?

The babyville stuff at Joanns is okay, but doesn't look like it's going to last much longer than the other noname velcro they have. The brand name Aplix I bought holds up better. There's also touchtape at DSS, but again, I say try to find Aplix

We don't have access to Joann's, but I ordered some from the online store you guys recommended.  hopefully it won't take long.
