Maternity fashion

I am starting to show, my jeans fit but I feel like they cut right at the point in my stomach that's just uncomfortable when I sit...or eat. I only have so many tunics for leggings.....I'm not wearing the maternity pants until I have to... Any suggestions?? Are those belly bands comfortable?

Re: Maternity fashion

  • The belly band was ok when all I had was minor bloat and my pants were a tad too tight. Now that I have an actual gut, I don't care for the belly band. I'd suggest to go right to the maternity pants.

  • Agreed - i felt like the my pants were falling with the bellyband. Just do the switch to a low profile skinny maternity jean. Looks great and works for a starter belly

  • I got a couple comfy pairs of maternity jeans from Old Navy and work pants from Kohls. I agree with NeverToo... Once you've had a good pair of maternity pants- rocking the belly band is nothing more than annoying. The investment is worth it. You'll likely be in them for some period after the baby is born too.
  • I agree with PPs that belly bands were wonderful for the bloat stage but awkward and ineffective now that bloat is gone (so I'm mostly skinny) but there is some actual bump. I still can't fit maternity pants, so I've been wearing regular skinny jeans/corduroys with a hair tie holding the zipper and button together during this awkward transitional period.

  • I actually really like the belly band. I ended up buying another one because it's helping me extend all my work clothes until I likely end up living in leggings until May. Besides having to go pee all the time and trying to get your pants / belly band/ cami to lay as flat as possible, once I get it situated it works well for my 12 hour days.
  • I like the belly band.  I just leave my pants unbuttoned with the belly band over it and it's pretty comfortable.  There is no way I can wear maternity jeans yet (13 weeks).  I pulled them out yesterday and the fell right off of me.

  • I went shopping last week and bought maternity clothes. They are very comfortable and I wanted to get my money out of them. I'm not showing yet just bloated in the afternoon so mainly I wear pants and reg shirts. The maternity shirts I bought don't look maternity just not as fitted.

Personally I'm not crazy about the bands because the pants to me are more comfortable.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I don't like belly bands so I went straight to maternity pants. As PP said, some are still too big and I find the full panel a bit annoying at this point, so I fold it over. Problem solved!

  • Switch to the maternity jean if you are uncomfortable. They make amazing ones now that you can't even tell are maternity.

With my last pregnancy, I held out as long as I could before going to maternity pants (probably sometime after 2O weeks). Once I made the switch I had NO idea why I waited so long. They are much more comfortable and there are super cute options. Also, they make your bump more pronounced. I actually looked like I had a bump and not a soft stomach. I lived in my skinny maternity jeans. This time around, I made the switch at like 12 weeks when my normal jeans still fit just fine with a belly band. I now find the belly band to be uncomfortable, but that is probably becauSe I am aware of the glorious full panel maternity jeans.

I could have written this. I went to my anatomy scan in regular pants. I wasn't showing much but my body had still changed a descent amount. I held off held off. Then I get mat. ants and was like well I'm never wearing anything else. I wouldn't hold off, OP. just buy some. You won't regret it!

  • What are these maternity gym clothes of which you speak?  I know about maternity yoga pants and yoga capris, but I can't seem to find normal maternity gym shorts or running pants.

Maybe you aren't buying the right size pants.... I'm 5'5" and 110lbs currently (at 14wks) and my size 24 (or XS) maternity jeans fit me. I have a small bump. I fold over the full band. I just have to pull them up every now and again. Sounds like your pants may just be too big.
Unfortunately for me, even the smallest maternity pants are too big at this point.  5'4" 100 lbs.  I have to love the belly band for now.

  • I'm going to switch to my maternity skirts any day now (I don't wear pants) just because they are so much more comfortable. If the maternity label freaks you out, fold-over maxi skirts are great if you have any and it's not too cold.

  • Maternity pants are incredibly comfortable, but I also found they made my belly more pronounced. So I will be holding out a few more weeks until we are ready to share our news. I'm making due with a belly band or a rubber band depending on how loose or stretchy my pants were to begin with. I would suggest a band with the rubber elastic lining at the bottom (I have the Ingrid and Isabel BellaBand) because it helps it stay in place.

I buy in the store so I can try on. We have a gap maternity store in Fairfax va. Buying online is so stressful for me!

Yes. I tried on my normal size, 6, and its a miracle! After getting knocked up I went down a whole size! I'm now a slender size 4. It does bother me that they don't have petite though so all pants I buy need to be tailored.

  • I'm obsessed with h&m. Not for their maternity line but for their basics Linda which has stretchy tunic dresses. I have a bump but still have a waist and would rather wear something fitted than huge. Those dresses with leggings are awesome and only 12.95 . I have one pair of the secret fit maternity panel pants, and they are so comfortable. Don't me ashamed of the maternity wear, if you only get a few months to wear them might as well get use out of them.

I've heard that h&m runs small (which is what I'm looking for) especially in pants.  Is that true?  There's only one h&m store in my area that has maternity but it's kind of a trek from my house.  Hoping the trip is worth it.  I need people to start making materinity clothes in junior sizes because I'm built like a 11 year old.

  • I used the belly band for a few weeks, but I bought maternity pants at 14 weeks and I'm in love with them! They are so comfortable. I don't know why all pants aren't made like maternity pants!

Yes it runs small. I had a small meltdown when I couldn't fit in size 8 maternity jeans and when I got over it I realized I couldn't have been able to fit one leg in those pre pregnancy lol. The regular clothes in basics and in juniors that are stretchy are worth the trip if you are creative.
