Digestive system cleanse

Just wondering if anyone has done any type of natural digestive cleanse while pregnant? Before i got pg I used to do a fruit and veggie juice cleanse (no pills, i used all natural fresh produce) once a month but I'm not sure if it's safe to do so now...I'm not seeking medical advice and I will talk to my doc when I go next week but I was just curious if any of you have done this or have any insight on it...

Re: Digestive system cleanse

  • "Cleanses" are completely medically unnecessarily and can be harmful, pregnant or not.

Why do you need to "cleanse"?

I don't "need" to per say, I've just been having allot of issues with my bowels and I feel so sluggish from it no matter how much water I drink and stool softeners don't really help...But I will just hold off, better to be safe than sorry...
  • Your body cleanses itself. You don't need "juice cleanses" and other fads. Want a "clean body"? Quit eating junk. Your body will take it from there.

    Your body is self-cleansing.

Yes, WTF? Awful idea during pregnancy. Any idea involving deprivation of calories is bad.

  • Umm, you are sluggish because you are pregnant.  Between hormones and a melon sized uterus pushing up against your bowels, of course you are sluggish.  It's a very common, normal issue, and it will likely continue until after you give birth.  Just keep eating a healthy, balanced diet.

  • Try some prune juice for the sluggish bowels. I hope it resolves itself :)>-
  • If you still feel like you have "sluggish" bowels after cutting out junk and eating more fruits and veggies, try adding a fiber supplement. I take two fiber gummies a day and it makes a big difference.

  • Definitely would NOT do a cleanse while pregnant. I had this issue with my prenatal vitamins. ( I ran out of the normal ones I use, Nature's Bounty, and grabbed some from Wal-Mart in an off week of me getting paid and had a lot of issues.) Just make sure you're eating correctly, enough protein and fiber and your body will fix itself.

  • The most important thing a pregnant woman's body needs is protein! Doesn't matter what source you get it from (protein powder, meat, beans, etc.) but you really need it! Protein is the building block of cells and crucial to cell development (which is all your baby is doing right now!). Doing a cleanse will pretty much cut out the recommended daily 70g of protein your body needs while pregnant.

  • I'm lol at complaining about "sluggish"
. I've been feeling tired for 3 years. Damn if a cleanse could solve it. :))

It's called Pregnancy & parenting. Anyone who says they are full of energy is full of shit.

  • I would be careful juicing, especially fruit, since you get A TON of sugar from those juices without the filling effects of the fiber from the pulp. I tend to have blood sugar crashes from not eating enough protein and eating too much fruit. Not saying you will or it happens to everyone just that it's possible.

  • I've done a juice cleansing before and while I think it worked out for me, I wouldn't do it while pregnant. If you have issues with constipation, try to add a little more fiber to your diet. Fruits and vegetables help a lot too. Good luck with everything.
  • I was feeling the same after eating more junk in first tri when I was sick.. This last week I've just gone back to eating more clean, fresh foods and lots of water. You'll feel better with that alone, but adding fresh juice would be yummy too! I wouldnt limit your calories though, but I'm sure you know that!

Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices sounds like a good idea WITH regular and healthy meals.  A cleanse in itself sounds like a really bad idea when pregnant, or honestly when not pregnant too.
Actually, eating fresh fruits and vegetables is a much better idea. You shouldn't be drinking your calories.  Fruit juice is loaded with sugar and a lot of vegetable juices are loaded with sodium.
------eta quote fail-------- I was referring to fruits and vegetables that are actually put in a juicer. I don't drink juices that are pre-bottled, and I assumed someone inquiring about a cleanse would be juicing it themselves instead of buying fake crap, but hey thanks for the disagreement. I know you love me.
It's still waaaay better to just eat the fruit or vegetable. Juicing means removing the fiber which is important--it's also filling, which is one of the reasons you can eat a lot of fruit & veggies without eating ridiculous amounts of calories. Kind of like eating dried fruit makes it easier to eat a lot of sugar, without the water filling you up.
This.  @unconventionalatbest.  It's clear you are delusional, I just pointed out that you gave bad advice.  Sorrynotsorry.
Except that drinking FRESH fruit and vegetable juice along with regular healthy meals instead of doing a cleanse is not bad advice.  Is eating the actual fruit and vegetable better than drinking it as some posters said? Sure! However, if that isn't going to happen then fresh fruit and vegetable juice isn't going to do anything buy give you added vitamins and minerals when added in with healthy eating.  My advice would have been awful had I not said fresh juice, which is the word you overlooked.  You assumed that I am was referring to bottled juices.  THAT would have been bad advice.  Kthanks.

No, I'm pretty sure @somerandomchick‌ meant freshly juiced which most people know removes fiber. Here's a little tidbit about juicing :
-Juicers remove essential dietary fiber, and you still have to eat whole foods in order to meet daily recommendations for fiber. This nutrient is important for colon health, and studies have shown that it can help prevent heart disease. Other claims that juicing can cure disease are dubious. The Mayo Clinic states that juicing does not help the body absorb nutrients any better. In fact, fiber assists the body in absorbing nutrients.
-Juicing your vegetables has some risks. Since there is no fiber with the sugar, it can lead to higher blood sugar spikes in diabetics, according to the American Cancer Society.
    Educate yourself before you speak.

::Sigh:: Yes, protein is important, and many women don't eat enough protein, pregnant or not. But, a) a balanced, healthy diet is more important than anything else, and b) not all protin sources are created equal. I would be highly skeptical of eating just any ole protein powder, pregnant or not. There's a shitton extra crap in that stuff. Better to get it from eating healthy nuts and seeds, lean meats, beans, legumes, and the other food groups, while not "protein" sources, still have protein.
Thank you for clarifying further for me. I know one source of protein is not good and it's best for protein to be pulled from multiple sources along with a balanced diet. My little list in the parentheses was trying to highlight those various sources, didn't mean pick one and stick with it. I was just trying to say that if she goes on a juice cleanse her protein intake would probably go way down. There are some people like me who may use protein powder as an additional protein supplement due to dietary restrictions keeping them from other high sources of protein. Protein powder as the only source of dietary protein is a terrible idea, obviously.

  • I love juicing, as a supplement to my diet, not as a replacement. If I'm feeling low on energy, juicing carrot/apple/celery usually picks me up, and it can help with regularity. But def a bad idea to do any type of cleanse while you're pregnant.
