Telling your new boss

So I just signed on at the new job today, and I'm 15 weeks pregnant. My employer has no idea yet, and I'm wondering when is a good time to tell them, since I havnt even completed training yet and considered still on probation

Re: Telling your new boss

  • It's too late obviously, but I would have mentioned it when you received the offer. It feels deceitful after the fact. They can't fire you for being pregnant, but your upcoming time off could make you not the right candidate for the job they needed to fill.

Either way, I would mention it now. If not, it will be pretty darn obvious within the next month and then things start to get awkward. I would make sure when you mention it be clear with how it will/will not affect your work, your plans for time off, and your commitment to continuing the work after the birth. Most employers worst fear in this situation is you will get trained and hired, cost them a lot in health insurance, then take paid maternity leave and never come back.

  • I recently got a new job, same company different department. My current department already knew and HR knew but I told my soon to be boss when I was offered the job. She already knew through the grapevines, but I would have felt weird not telling her.

  • Have you completed your insurance/hr stuff? Maybe u can discuss your maternity leave options with hr, then discuss your plans with your boss.
