Sleep Help

oh yay! A sleep thread. We haven't had one in a while.

SS situation: J went from being an awesome sleeper to waking up every 1.5-2 hours. After two months, I was done and we have been trying modified cio. Basically, you let them cry for 10 minutes, soothing talk, back rubs, no picking up for two minutes and then leave. The time of crying increases every night. Last night was night #2.

He went down around 8, fussed for about 30 minutes but wasn't really crying hard so I didn't go in. He slept until 2, H went in for the routine, he kept crying and fell asleep after 20 minutes.

Around 4:30, he woke up hysterical. Like screaming, losing his shit, trouble breathing crying. H couldn't soothe him at all so I went in and nurses him (after about 20 minutes - if felt like the only option). He ate and then fell asleep until 7.

How can I prevent that hysterical, scream cry? Is it just part of cio? It breaks my heart :(

Re: Sleep Help

  • Maybe he was just hungry since it had been 8 hours since his last feed. I suggest you try the sleepeasy solution. A lot of us have had good results with it.

  • Maybe I'll pick up a copy. The thread was really long and I haven't had the energy to sort through it :\">

  • Weaning off the night feeds really helped us - I was really, REALLY nervous about it but it actually worked so well.

As far as the hysterical crying... sadly, yea. It happens. Fortunately for us it only happened for the first two nights. I mean, he still cries, he is a baby, but now he can soothe himself.

I struggle with that a lot, like I'm sure most od us do, but I had to let him learn how to do it - I couldn't soothe him either at the point where we started this, you know?

  • One of my biggest take aways from the sleep easy method is that you cannot touch them. That hinders their ability to learn how to soothe themselves. And as the book points out, it isn't working to touch and soothe them so don't keep doing it (I was trying to do that too and it didn't work). I will also say that for us, after one long hour of letting him cry it out but us doing check ins (essentially walking in the room letting them hear your voice and feel your presence) he has not had any more long tyraids. But I think it is important to let them learn how to help themselves and to do that we have to stop.
  • Sleep here sucks right now. LO will only go 3-4 hour stretches then wake himself up and cry until I soothe him. It doesn't help that we bed share and originally that is why we brought him to bed with us. Now none of us are sleeping and training will be even harder :|

  • I'm reading the book now and planning on starting sleep training Sunday. My LO is almost 13 lb and 4 months so I need to do a night feeding. And pump , my supply lowered after stomach bug and I do not want to get to that dark place again.
LO sleeps with us and recently her sleep sucks, she wakes every 1,5 and no way of soothing her other then swing. I'm so tired. I really don't want her to cry but I know we all need her to sleep on her own. Fingers crossed.

FWIW, I went from bed sharing to SleepEasy training and we've had some great results. We had issues with consistency (or as I like to call it 'user error') in the beginning, but he's doing so much better than he was - bedtime and naps in his crib now! We still have some stuff to iron out, but it was A LOT easier than I had worried myself into thinking it would be.

Did he cry a lot? That scares me the most. Other then sleep issues at night she is super happy baby and I just don't want to break her. How did you survived first days?

  • It's available for download on the iPhone too! I did both because my copy was taking to long to ship.
@katburdette Do you know the name of the app? I tried looking for it but couldn't find it...
