2nd Trimester

severe hip pain and unable to walk

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.First of all let me say I have a right leg prosthesis and have some hip dysplasia and mild arthritis in my hips  I'm 14 weeks and last Friday I woke up to go to work and was just unable to move or put any weight on my left hip.  It truly feels like it is dislocated. It's not just mild hip pain from being pregnant.  Called OBGYN, they said to stay off of it and take Motrin if I had to.  Wasted a trip to the ortho because he wouldn't even discuss anything with me as I'm pregnant and they can't do xrays.  So I stayed off my hip on the weekend and was able to walk a little Sunday.  By Monday I went back to work and was able to walk on it again, but slowly.  Tuesday at work, they had to wheel me out to my car in an office chair lol  I honestly could not even stand up on it, much less take a step!  And if I rest for a while, I can take about 5 steps, then that's it...it hurts so bad and I feel like I'll collapse.  It's very intermittent and I don't know when it's coming so I have been using a w/c to get around...but can't go to work.  I have the best fiance and daughter that help me so much.  Not to mention I'm getting married Nov 15 and am worried I won't be able to walk down the isle!  Also, I'm an Occupational Therapist Assistant, so I've been stretching and alternating modalities but nothing is helping me were I can walk again.  Anyone experience something like this?

Re: severe hip pain and unable to walk

  • I have an appointment for Monday, but I believe I might have something called Pelvic Girdle Pain. It mostly affects my glutes, but it also bothers my hips. My pain is more like when you over do it at the gym, but it doesn't bother me all day, only at as I begin to unwind once I am home from my work day. It is annoying! Here is a link to some of the symptoms.  Maybe it will help.

  • Try a hip brace. It has helped me a ton. I just wear it at night while I sleep, not too tight, and it has all but eliminated my awful hip pain. It's just a thick band of elastic that you wear below your belly and you can find them on Amazon. I think the one I got is by "its you babe" or something like that. Your joints loosen because of hormones and a brace keeps your pelvis from falling apart (not really but it is painful enough to feel like that)
  • I have a right leg below knee prosthesis and have bad left hip pain. Mine is worse when I wake up. I haven't found anything that helps :(. Let me know if you find anything.

  • Try an SI belt. More adjustable than something stretchy. Also, what shoes are you wearing? Make sure they are supportive with good stabilization and support. If I wear cute shoes I pay for it for days with hip pain. You might also try a chiropractor. Feel better!
