Trouble TTC

Using provera 10 mg to get pregnant?

Hello,
My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year in January. We have been having some issues because my periods are so irregular. I went off the pill last November and then got a period in the beginning of December, then the end of January, then the middle of March, then didn't get one until Mid August and then the last period I had was the end of September. I told my doctor this and he decided to put me on Provera 10mg for seven days. I guess my question is has anyone else had luck using this drug to get pregnant? I am looking for experiences that people have had.
Thanks in advance!!

  • Provera doesn't get you pregnant. It is a hormone called progesterone. When you stop taking it the withdrawal of that hormone induces a period. Much like what birth control pills do. What your real problem probably is that you are not ovulating regularly. Which could mean you have PCOS. You should ask you doctor about that and see if he will refer you to an infertility specialist.

As others have noted, Provera is used to induce a "withdrawal bleed" - not really the same as a natural period, but it is intended to "jumpstart" your cycle to attempt to regulate it.  Results vary, depending on why your periods were irregular in the first place.  I have PCOS, and for me it produced a withdrawal bleed but I still didn't ovulate on my own, so it didn't fix my cycles.

If this doesn't work for you, I think that anyone on this board (including myself) would recommend getting a referral to an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) who specializes in this stuff much more than a GYN.

If you are looking for success stories, I would recommend trying the PAIF board, as most women here on the 3T board are still trying to get pregnant.
