Silverware and Water Glasses

Based on recommendations here, I purchased Crate and Barrel Aspen dishes.

We are hosting Thanksgiving for the first time ever, so I am now scrambling to procure sufficient quantities of ... everything.  Minimum headcount will be 16 adults.

What suggestions do you have for reasonable silverware (not flimsy, has a little weight, dishwasher safe, not spendy).  Somehow much of ours has gone missing; I think the kids accidentally throw it away when scraping plates after dinner.

And what about water glasses?  We have a set of eight goblets that I love, but I think I am just going to bite the bullet and buy a larger new set.

Re: Silverware and Water Glasses

  • Have you looked on Overstock.com?  They have some really beautiful sets and great prices sometimes on silverware and dishes.  Definitely read the reviews, though.  I have ordered several things from them and one time a plate was chipped on the edge and they immediately sent a new one, no questions asked.

  • I got the Caterers Box set of 12 from Pottery Barn. It is about 4/glass and they are a nice weight. They also have fork/knife/spoon as well. I got a set of 12 place settings +5 piece hostess set for everyday from Macy's as well.

  • We use plastic spoons, cups, and paper plates. Ain't nobody got time for all of those dishes.

  • I think my everyday flatware came from tj maxx. My glasses and plates do not match because I only registered for 8 of stuff so I have to mix.

  • I went to Christmas tree shops (regional to NE, don't actually sell Christmas trees) and got cheap sets of white plates and silverware for when we host holidays. They look decent and I keep them in Tupperware in the basement when we aren't using them. I use plastic glasses.
