Trouble TTC

IUI pain

Sorry ahead of time, this turned into more of a rant than question....

I had IUI#2 yesterday morning and because my bladder wasn't super full like last month she had a harder time getting the catheter in (which was painful at the time, or so I thought) After all was finished, I felt ok UNTIL I started walking through the parking garage....OH THE PAIN! I literally felt like there was a F-ing pokey stick up my ass and vagina at the same time! I probably was very entertaining to watch as I wobbled to my car. Unfortunately, DH was unable to stay for my appt this month due to work timing. So I laid in my car for about 10 mins until I got the nerve to drive the hour home.  All day yesterday I was uncomfortable sitting or walking and the damn Tylenol wasn't working. (RE highly recommends just taking Tylenol and no Ibuprofen. WTF, I am not pregnant yet) I thought I would wake up this morning and all would be better. I am still uncomfortable sitting and standing up.

This didn't happen last month just slight discomfort at time of insertion and that was it. Has anyone experienced this much discomfort with IUI?

Re: IUI pain

  • That sounds so uncomfortable. I've had 3 iui's now and I have felt the minor discomfort of the insertion of the catheter but it's not an aweful feeling. I have only ever had my procedures in the mornings and afterwards I have some slight cramping for the day and then nothing the next day. GL!
  • That sounds like a rupturing follicle - the debilitating pain as if something is hurting you deep in the vagina/rectum area. That's happened to me a few times, with a rupturing follie and rupturing cysts. It's possible that your follicle(s) ruptured and ovulated at that time?

BTW, I just read recently that IUIs where it was easy to insert the catheter have a high chance of success - so hope this cycle is your BFP, but if not, maybe make sure to have a full bladder next time?

Also - for those of us with retroverted uteri - often an empty bladder makes IUI (and ultrasounds) easier. :)

  • Thank you all for you input. It will get better and just have to remember I am glad we were able to follow through with the IUI. I will take the pain!

@BlueFairy5 You had a great point about the NSAID, never thought of that. Makes sense.

@BunnyBerry I never thought of ovulation at the same time too! I read that about the success rate for IUI with easy insertion, but hopefully I will still have a chance :)

  • @firstarabesque It's not a guarantee an empty bladder will make it easier, but my first pelvic US years ago, they couldn't see anything with a full bladder and had me empty it, then the RE's office always had me empty my bladder, and so I read online and found that it is usually better empty with a retroverted ute! I guess because a full bladder just pushes the ute even lower/farther back, which could help a ute in normal position line up with the vagina, but gives us a kink in the cervix?

  • I have never had pain right after iui from the procedure itself. I do usually have cramping or ovulation type pain afterwards, and my ovaries get really sensitive. I think I might call the Dr if the pain continues.

    *****Everyone is welcome******

  • I had minor cramping for a few days more like twinges. My IUI ended with being preggo w/ my daughter :) the no ibuprofen is because it is considered an anti inflammatory and the uterus is supposed to react to that as well and you want to get preg so not using anti inflammatories is recommended. Wish u luck this month!!
