Faking?

Started over the weekend, LO keeps coughing. No other symptoms besides being a royal grouch yesterday. My nephew also has a cough but I figured if DS caught something, he would have other symptoms. My MIL keeps saying "that is such a fake cough". I don't know if he is mimicking but it seems to happen too much for that.

Re: Faking?

  • Is he drooling a lot? It's common for the babes to cough because of all the spit they are collecting. That's the case with us. :)

  • My DD has been doing this for awhile. She smiles while doing it. I think she likes the feeling and sound of it.
  • DD was doing this and I also thought she was doing it because she wanted attention, I'd put her down she would start coughing, picked her up and she would stop. Little stinker ;-).

  • Yep. What pp have said. LO has discovered this is a fun sound to make, and thinks it's hilarious when someone else coughs or sneezes, and will sometimes mimic. I'm considering it social play unless she has other symptoms.

Yep it's a sign of teething our pedi said. It's the spit collecting at the back of their throats. DS does this all the time and we crack up because before I asked about it we would say faker! Good to know though!
  • DS learned to fake cough at exactly 6 months, after DH and I shared bad case of bronchitis. Babies at this age love to mimic, esp if it gets them a response.

  • Thanks for the info. I thought it might be too much drool but ya never know. Babies are so smart, I don't give him enough credit
  • I made a fake cough noise at my son 3 weeks ago and then laughed. He thought it was funny and started laughing, too. For the next 2 weeks, he fake coughed and eventually the fake cough turned into fake laughing. He just loved it.
