Cloth Diapering

NCDR: Crafty/Sewer Moms

I want to make my LO a wearable blanket with legs. All the ones I can find are fleece or other synthetics and he can only wear natural fibers due to rash issues. What material could I make it with. It needs to be cotton or wool but thick for warmth yet soft. Any ideas?

  • Maybe a cotton flannel.

  • Merino wool is nice and soft, and you should be able to find a washable version. I'm pretty sure it comes in different weaves/knits/boiled etc. but I haven't sewn with it. I recently passed a wool sleep sack on to my nephew, and it was a soft thick merino. It felt like a polar fleece, only nicer.

  • All the commercially available ones I've seen are made from stretch knit. Id probably try to find a 100% cotton fleece - maybe even at old sweatshirt. Wool also sounds good, but personally I haven't seen with it and would be a little intimidated. That's just me, though. Flannel would be warm, but you might need to add extra fabric so LO has room enough to stretch his legs since the fabric itself doesn't stretch.

Green Mountain has a couple of wool sleepsacks, and a swaddle blanket.
  • Oh, I will check out GMD but I will maybe try Merino. Love wool. Thanks for the ideas!!

  • Maybe bamboo? It's a bit softer than wool. The softer wools you will find are usually cut with a synthetic material to make it softer.

I meant to type sewn instead of seen. Oops! But I had no idea GMD carries sleep sacks. Very cool!

  • FWIW: I found some heavy weight Merino fabric online for $16 a yard so will try that as an option. Thanks for the input ladies. GMD does not have leg sleep suits, only the sack

  • You can easily up cycle sweaters into a sleep sack. Just read the label for fiber content. I even save the labels for future reference.
