First Failed IVF

Hi,

I just received the news that my beta test was negative and my first IVF did not work.  Everything else up until this point went so well.  We had 29 mature eggs, 23 were fertilized, and we had several near perfect embryos so we transferred one on day 5.  We had 8 frozen (4 of grade 1 and 4 of grade 2).  Needless to say, I am highly disappointed in the news (this is actually an understatement).  I really appreciate this discussion board and any feedback you might have for those with experience in this area.

Did anyone else have a great looking embryo transferred at day 5 fail?  If so, do you know why this happened?

How long do I have to wait to do another transfer?

What are the success rates for frozen transfer versus fresh transfer?

Finally, should I try transferring 2 embryos next time since the first time was unsuccessful?

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: First Failed IVF

  • Hi my first embryo transfer failed so I know how you feel.
My Dr. told me that frozen has a better result then fresh so we opted to freeze all.
My embryo was 5BA so damn near perfect, and my Dr. seemed happy with it. My Dr.s opinion was that is was probably not a generically normal embryo and that is why it didn't stick. My opinion is the cramps I had and using suppostiores instead of PIO didn't help things.
I would like to try transferring 2 but my Dr. says it doesn't do much except up my chances of twins and he doesn't want that.
I will do my next transfer in Dec. because this cycle we are doing a mock cycle and a endo. scratch to try and up my chances for next time.
I am sorry this happened to you.
What does your Dr. think went wrong?

  • Hi! so sorry! HUGS! All my embies have failed me at some point. They were all 5 Day blasts of perfect or near perfect quality. TBH it is very common for first transfer to fail. IT SUX BIG TIME! I am doing PGS this time and just went through recurrent loss blood panel. to get some answers. You are far from this. You can probably do another transfer in 2 weeks after you get AF. Transferring 2 embies might be a good idea if you are over a certain age. Frozen transfers typically have the sam rate or better of working. FX for next time! HUGS!!!

I have had a total of 3 5d embies graded AA not even take. Then I've also had 2 5d embies graded AA take and then miscarried at 7 and 9 weeks. A BFN is extremely discouraging. I won't get into why mine fail because it isn't likely the same problem most have..... But I will say this..... From what I understand in a perfect IVF world with perfect embryos, transferring one at a time has a success rate of somewhere around 60%. So it really is a numbers game. Ask a bunch of questions at your WTF appt and hang in there. It sounds like you have a number of embryos left, right?

  • Sorry about your BFN. My understanding is that even nice looking embryos often have abnormalities and that's usually why they don't implant. Hopefully one of your frosties will work out for you :). You may need to take a cycle off to let your body recover before doing a FET, depending on the practices followed by your clinic.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

  • Thank you all so much for your responses!  It is very helpful to hear from others with similar experiences!
  • Sorry to hear about the BFN. I got one this month too. I actually got my period before my beta so beta was really no shock, even though I still held a tiny bit of hope, at that point a positive would have been more shocking than a negative. It was my first IVF attempt. Sucks sucks sucks.
I actually was so hopeful (young and healthy) I didn't even think that it would not work. We had a great retrieval and fertilization report. I had two embies put in.

My office says that we can go right into a frozen transfer. I need a break though. We will be out of the country for the second half of November and I don't want to have to worry about flying/ traveling/ testing/ missed appts. Just want to remove one of the stresses. I was also told that my IVF lab is 'closed' for most of December.....umm so who will be watching my ice embies? :/  hehe So we will be going forth with a FET in January. Excited and hopeful for it. I mean you can make the research look anyway you like, but it seems that people are very successful with the frozen transfers. FX!!!!!  When we do the FET we will put in two embies again. Still have to set up my WTF appt. Just not in the mood yet, maybe I will call tomorrow. I'd like to see if we can just do it as a conference call. DH wont be able to miss work again and I honestly dont want to drive three hours just for a chat about what went wrong....If I don't have to be physically assessed, then a phone call should suffice....
  • Hi! I'm so sorry yours didn't work either. FX for Jan! Can I ask how you decided on transferring 2 embryos? Were your embryos frozen at day 5? I ask because I can't decide between 1 or 2. My doctor said he'd lean towards 1 because I have 4 great frozen embryos and if I transfer 1 at a time, 1 of the 4 statistically should work. Of course if it's not until the 4th one that works, that could take a toll emotionally and financially so if I'm anxious I could transfer 2. While I don't mind the idea of twins, I worry about the risks. Anyway, my husband and I are going back and forth. The doctor also told us at this point he wouldn't recommend tests to find out what went wrong and sometimes an embryo is just going to be abnormal and I had about a 60% chance of it working, but unfortunately it was not in my favor this time. Did you talk with your doctor yet? What did he say? I wish you the best of luck!
  • Siggy warning ----

I had a failed first IVF transfer with 2 great embryos, I was very disappointed too, there was no reason given why it wasn't successful. If you don't mind twins, I suggest transferring 2 next time.

I actually had read success stories online and thought fresh was more effective than frozen but for us, first frozen worked.

Had the IVF in December 2013 and waited until June 2014 for the frozen because I was sad and wanted a break.

  • @14cath‌ my first IVF failed with a single embryo (IVF #2 beta is 11/10) and we really pushed for transferring two this time. We aren't doing embryo testing for abnormalities, due to cost. So we really felt strong about transferring two, at least one of them may stick and not have abnormalities. If we get twins, we are good with that. I just feel like it's a safer choice for us. We will find out Monday!!
  • My first IvF was very similar to yours. I ended up with 26 eggs retrieved and 10 5 day blasts. I transferred 1 AA blast. I'm young and my issue is MFI so I was very optimistic but it was a bfn. I feel like those of us who yield a higher number of eggs have a lower chance of having a successful fresh transfer due to the turmoil our bodies are put through. I just did my first frozen transfer this morning and opted to transfer two this time around because I feel like even just slightly better odds are good with me.

Good luck on your frozen transfer.

  • Hello all,

I am in need of some advice/motivation. I am 26 years old and new to this whole ivf thing and not very familiar with all of the acronyms. Anyways, i just had a fresh cycle that failed which i was shocked because im so young and the doc told me i had a really good chance. I am healthy and my partner has morphology issues. But whatever the reason was, the one embryo they transferred did not stick although it was a very good quality embryo. I got AF 3 days before my beta was scheduled and from that moment i knew it was over and it was not normal. I took 3 hpt and they all came back negative. The beta later confirmed it. Now i am currently waiting for my insurance to approve my FET. I have 3 frozen embryos and are all blast. I am scared to transfer more than one and end up with twins. But i would hate more to get another BFN if i only transfer one. Has anyone here gotten AF with their fresh cycle and not with their FET? Also, should i risk in transfering 2? Sometimes i sit here and think as to why it didnt work the first time. I wonder if there is something wrong with me. But my doc has ran a lot of tests and other than my low platelet count, im good. Also, i have my wtf appt in march. But my nurse said i can move forward with the FET before then and dont have to wait for the appt. is this a good idea? Has anyone continued with their second try before having their wtf appt? I know these are alot of questions, but i just need some help. Thanks for reading and good luck to all.

@Oneday2525‌ - you will have better success of responses if you begin a new post instead of piggybacking off of an old one. It's risky to comment on older posts as some members may have graduated and their siggys may have triggers. Try posting an intro and let us get to know you.

I'm sorry for your failed cycle. I personally would meet with my RE before planning a FET cycle, in order to preserve frosties -- they're like gold to me. I wouldn't want to waste any without knowing what went wrong/what would be recommended for future. He/she would also be the one to ask re transferring 1 vs 2 embryos. It's a personal decision that should be made with your history and situation in mind. FET have been shown to have better success than fresh.

GL! I hope you stick around and join the monthly check-ins.

IVF #1 all of our embryos arrested before transfer, but we had 1 grade 1 early blast from IVF#2 and it ended in c/p, we had a grade 1 expanded blast and a grade 2 early blast from IVF #3 and it was a BFN, we transferred 2 blasts and a morula for our donor embryo FET and it was also a BFN.  Right now we have 2 grade 2 expanded blasts in the freeze for our FET in January.

I don't know for certain why our transfers failed, but I do have some immune issues that we not being agressively treated for my IVF cycles and not treated at all during my Donor embryo FET.  I also found out that I have poor blood flow to my uterus.  We could very easily also have an embryo quality issue, my embryos always look like crap on day 3, but 1 or 2 usually make it to blast.

How long do I have to wait to do another transfer?

It depends on your clinic.  My clinic batches so you have to have a month off inbetween cycles because the overlap some ( the next cycle starts before the previous is finished).  Some clinics will let you do back to back cycles.

What are the success rates for frozen transfer versus fresh transfer?

My clinic has similar success rates with frozen transfers as fresh.  I was just talking with the receptionist this morning and she was telling me that the success rates for November FETs (December results aren't in yet) were some of their best yet.

Finally, should I try transferring 2 embryos next time since the first time was unsuccessful?

It really depends on your diagnosis and your comfort level with multiples.  I am transferring 2 for my FET, but given my history of failed transfers and poor embryo quality, I doubt that my odds of multiples are very high.  For my donor embryo FET, we actually transferred 3, but the RE felt that the risk of higher order multiples wasn't very high.

Thank you so much for your help!
