Ditching my Ob-Gyn for a midwife?

Hi everyone! I just found out that I'm pregnant last week and went ahead and scheduled my first prenatal appointments with a nurse on 11/21 and then with my regular ob-gyn on 12/2. I've only seen my ob-gyn twice for regular check-ups since I moved to Boston a few years ago, but I do like her a lot. I'm just thinking I would like to use a certified nurse midwife for my pregnancy instead, and we're switching from my insurance to my husband's for next year which has better coverage and includes the MGH midwives in their preferred network. Is it OK to stick with those first couple appointments at my regular doctor's office even if I'm not sure I want to stay with her, or should I start looking into midwives right away and try to have all my appointments with the same provider? Did anyone else switch providers during pregnancy? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

  • I didn't switch care teams during my pregnancy (and I haven't given birth yet), but I think you're fine switching when you feel ready.

If your first appointment is with a nurse, I wonder if the practice you go to is like mine, with both obs and nurse midwives providing care.  I alternate between the two for prenatal appointments, and we can choose if we want an ob or midwife delivery.

  • Yes, I switched from South End Health Center to the midwives at Cambridge Birth Center at around 14 weeks. I had already gone to a few appointments with my original provider, and it was no issue.
