STM+ gear help

I am due with baby number 2 in May. I am trying to figure out things like do I need a new pump. Mine has been used by at least three people (my stepmom used it and gave it to me and a friend is currently using it) and I'm not sure if I should get another one to start with. I'll probably use it a couple of times a day. I SAH, but last time I donated a lot and I'd like to do that again. My insurance doesn't cover them. And what about a crib. My February baby is still in his crib and he seems quite comfortable in there. I feel kind of bad taking him out of his comfy space before he is ready. I am obviously not going to buy these things tomorrow, but I'm just trying to plan ahead financially. Thanks a bunch ladies!

Re: STM+ gear help

  • We are due next month, so I can tell you what our plans are.

I am gettting a new pump, but mine is covered by insurance.  Yours sounds like it has had a fair amount of use, so you might look into getting a new one if it is financially feasible.  Otherwise, I know a lot of people just pull it apart to make sure there is no mold and clean it out before the next kid comes.

Our plan was not to get a crib, because the baby would be sleeping in our room for the first 6+ months anyways.  We have a spare PNP we were going to put in new baby's room if we needed her to nap in there or something.  I put a crib on our registry in case we ended up moving her into her room much earlier than expected (so we could get the 15% discount), but then someone bought it for us.  So...we might be going with a crib after all.

  • I say check it out but buy new replacement parts.

We are due in jan. We moved feb baby into a bed about two months ago. She is doing really well. We just told her the crib is for baby. Now she throws newborn diapers in it and says baby baby baby night.

Adding...I read you should leave at least two months between kicking one kid out of the crib if they are being replaced for another to avoid putting blame on baby for the move. Or get a cheap ikea crib

Eta: that should have said by another not for another lol

  • Thanks ladies. DH did take our pump apart and cleaned it out when I was still using it for E. I guess we will check it out before we buy new and I will buy new parts for it.

I was looking at the ikea cribs. We don't have a store near us, the closet one is 3 hours away, so I would be buying blindly. Does anyone have one? Do you like it?
  • If the pump still works well, I would probably just clean it and possibly get new parts (but at the very least sterilize them).

We bought a second crib for DS. DD does so well in hers and I don't think she's ready for a bed anyway. Plus, her crib transitions to a toddler bed, so either way we would've needed a new crib for the baby since we plan to just convert it when she's ready.

  • I've got two cribs. E hasn't minded sharing many things, but he got very possessive of his crib and his blankets. Of your older one is particularly attached to any item, get a new one for the new baby (within reason, of course, kids can share some). You save a lot of headaches if you just start out with new baby having his/her own lovies, even if you don't give it right away.

  • I've used the same pump for four kids and will use it again with #5, assuming it still works when I pull it out of storage.  Before each baby I do, however, replace the tubing and buy new valves.

I would not buy another crib if I were you.  In our case, my babies sleep in a bassinet or in bed with me for quite a while.  They nap during the day in a bouncy seat or carrier.  So I don't really need the crib for the baby until they are closer to 5-6 months old and by that time, with our spacing, the older child is ready to move to a big girl/boy bed.

  • I think we will skip the crib because like you ladies mentioned the baby will sleep in the co-sleeper or with me for a while. DS was in our bed until 15 months. I'm not sure why that didn't occur to me. I have a moby and a boba carrier for napping too. Plus a swing and all of the other fancy things I had for DS. Thank you! I'm sure I will be back with more questions as my pregnancy progresses.
