Food Allergy Question

Sorry, MK, if this bugs you just avert your eyes for a minute.

So L has been up most of the nearly morning writhing and and squealing in pain. He finally passed so gas, so I'm hoping we'll all get some rest. I'd like to figure out what I ate that may have caused the reaction. Would it most likely be the eggs I had for breakfast? Onions in the chicken & veg we had for dinner Saturday and Sunday? Or the piece of soft pretzel with butter that I ate without thinking on Thursday?

Re: Food Allergy Question

  • Poor baby. And poor mama. My kid is super gassy and we've had many of those nights so I feel your pain.

I don't know that you can really pinpoint what it was. Maybe even a combo of things. You could keep a food diary to see if you see a pattern, but you may never know.

When R has that problem, I lay him down and bicycle his legs. It helps him a ton. Our pedi also said if you take a warm wash cloth, put it on his belly and gently massage in a downward and circular motion it will help move the gas along.

In our house, this now happens mostly only when I accidentally eat dairy. But that doesn't mean it would be the same for you.

  • Food intolerances are such a mind f*ck.  It is just absolutely impossible to know whether it's from something you did "wrong" or if your baby is just being a baby.  I completely understand how you feel Jane.  Every single time P spits up or cries, I analyze every single thing I've done that day, the previous day, the previous week.  Ugh.  And sometimes I'll eventually figure it out.  Sometimes, I won't.  Sometimes, it's just a baby being a baby, but you're so used to it your baby dealing with food intolerances, that you don't know what "normal" is for your baby.  I know exactly how frustrating this is for you.

My first thought was the pretzel with butter.  But 3 days later is an awful long time to be because of that.  Did you end up cutting soy too?  Could there have been hidden soy in something you ate?  (Goodness gracious the places soy hides!)  Did you eat out at a restaurant?  I find P reacts just about every time I eat food we didn't cook ourselves.  I don't know if she's just super sensitive and is reacting to cross contamination, or if I'm making bad decisions when I order, or what.

If L is fine today, I would just write it off as a passing thing.  And whatever you do, don't beat yourself up over it or stress like crazy trying to figure it out.  It will get better, it will get easier, he will tolerate things better, and you will learn to avoid things better.  Big hugs, and I hope you are able to get some rest sometime today.

  • Yes, I meant sensitivity, I think. I dunno. I'm so tired. In addition to the gas, his eczema has flared again. Of course, that could be from the pretzel. I haven't cut out soy yet bc his gas had been so much better. Plus we just started reflux meds and I didn't want to do both things at once and then not know which change was doing what. Oh well.
