High-Risk Pregnancy

ITP pregnancy

Hello all! my name is Megan, I'm a mother of a 5 year old healthy boy. My husband and I are planning to try for #2 after Christmas. I have an autoimmune disorder called ITP which basically just means that i have low platelets. I was diagnosed during my first pregnancy and given a lot of prednisone for treatment. Honestly, I didn't know anything about my diagnosis at the time and my doctor wasn't very well versed in my condition. It was a bad combination but thankfully resulted in a very healthy baby. This time around I found a great specialist who will manage me during my pregnancy, but still, I'd love to talk to some women who have gone through this before. Anyone out there have ITP or similar autoimmune difficulties?

Re: ITP pregnancy

  • Glad you found a great specialist this time round! I've had ITP for years, and this is my first pregnancy. My platelets are usually around 60, so not on the extreme end of the scale.
  • That's awesome that your platelets are at a safe level. Have they dropped much since you got pregnant?

  • Much to the specialists surprise they actually rose, which apparently doesn't happen much. They got to an all time high of 118 when I went into labour which was really great, since that meant I could have all the drugs :) however now 4 months pp they're back down to the 60 mark.
