As a hobby, my mom enjoys writing poems. She has written them for as long as I can remember and is by no means a professional writer, nor has she ever published anything, but her poems are from the heart and very special to my family. I have been very open about my fertility challenges with my mom (my theory was the more you know about your female family history the better you know where to start) My mom struggled for many years and had several mc's so she has walked in our shoes somewhat understands the pains and struggles. We are pretty close and she has been my biggest cheerleader through our journey. We even took her to some of my appointments and the transfer. I wanted to share the poem she has been writing for me, it is not finished and she will probably write several more pages as our story continues, but I wanted to share it in hopes it will put a little light in someone's day!!! Enjoy!!
As is tradition,
A poem I will pen.
Now a baby journey,
For dear Ryan and Jen.
A day in September,
To Cleveland they went.
Met Doctor Goldfarb,
A kind, smiling gent.
He gave them hope,
That a baby could be.
In a few weeks,
They would start fertility.
Endometriosis
Would not control their fate.
For years they had been trying,
Now it’s months that they must wait.
The day finally came,
For the process to start.
Jen and Ry wanted this babe,
With all the love in their heart.
We left the lake at five,
For appointments at seven.
Kept our eyes on the prize,
Our little piece of Heaven.
Luprin, Menopure,
Follistim and more.
Many shots in the belly,
Made it red, bruised and sore.
Her tummy was a war zone,
Ryan named her tender skin.
Another pinch, another poke,
Precious medication flowing in.
Ryan gave Jen daily shots,
She endured the pain with smiles.
Countless trips to Ohio,
Worth driving all those miles.
Some days there were headaches,
Side-effect of a med.
Jen kept her spirits high,
Through the pounding in her head.
Took sonogram pics
For follicles to show
Three left, seven right,
To monitor as they grow.
Some grew fast, some grew slow,
Til the proper size was met.
The surgery was scheduled,
A retrieval date was set.
Next came the trigger shot,
Direct hit of HCG.
Again the welt was worth it,
To add to their family.
An early Sunday morning,
Five eggs the doctor did take.
Did ICSI to fertilize them,
Then a few more days to bake.
Got a call on Monday,
Four eggs were doing fine.
Yes, they had turned to embryos,
Ryan’s sperm had crossed the line!
Next came the ouchy shot,
Progesterone was its name.
But first a patch with Lidocaine,
To help lessen the pain.
Jen scrunched her eyes up tight,
Knew the hurt was soon to come.
But Ryan injected the shot with ease,
Then tenderly rubbed her bum.
They kept their little secret,
Of all that they’d been through.
But asked for prayers and blessings,
From the tiny group who knew.
Got a call, an embryo died
But the egg that was doing poor,
Got fertilized that morning,
They were back to having four!
Next came embryo transfer,
Time to grant their greatest wish.
Two babies planted in mommy’s womb,
From their home in a petri dish.
They dressed us in white ‘bunny suits’,
With booties, hair net and mask.
We giggled yet looked professional,
As if surgery was our task.
With a bladder full of water,
To tip the uterus just so.
It was the perfect position,
To insert each fragile embryo.
Our babies popped up on a screen,
A grain of salt was their size.
Looked like tiny bubbles,
Human life right before our eyes.
Gently sucked up in a tube,
Then implanted in their mommy.
We prayed that they would settle in,
And grow within her tummy.
For twenty minutes Jen did rest,
On her back with bended knee.
She actually laid much longer than that,
Afraid to get up and go pee!
Next we played the waiting game,
Two weeks crawled oh so slow.
The sun would rise, the sun would set,
A day closer to when we would know.
For now we pray and our secret kept,
Until we get the good news.
Then we’ll tell the world and celebrate
With friends and family cheering woo-hoos!!
