Vaginal ultrasound

So for my first appointment which is Nov 12, I just found out that they are going to do a vaginal US. I will be 7 1/2 weeks then. Has anyone else had one yet? I'm just really nervous about it. And it doesn't seem very exciting that for our first appointment my husband is going to watch them stick a probe in me instead of just rubbing on my stomach. They told me unless I wanted to wait till I was 12weeks this is how they do it now.

  • It's not too bad. I had one done last Friday. Depending on the place either you or the ultrasound tech can insert the probe. You should be covered with a towel so DH won't see it go in. Try not to worry about it! You will be just fine!
  • I had one done at 6 weeks! Personally it doesn't bother me only because they do this on a daily basis and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. I know I've heard of some people saying it's uncomfortable but it wasn't bad at all! I seen the beans heartbeat fluttering away a lot better then the normal stomach scan! It's really exciting! I have another one scheduled for 11/3 and I'm hoping it's vaginal only because we seen it a lot better! Good luck to you :)
  • I felt the same way but vaginal US isn't so bad. It was odd bc the sonogram tech asked me to put it in myself.  I had one other lady do the same thing at another time.  Not sure what that is about because it's a medical environment.  Shouldn't be anything sexual about it if that is their reason for being strange about it.

My boyfriend was in the room too and I just stuck it in and we were immediately stuck on the screen in hopes of seeing our baby's heartbeat.

I have had a vaginal US for my other 2 pregnancies too and it's not that bad. A sheet is over you so your hubby might not see much.

I wish you all the best and Congratulations! :)

  • Thank you for all the comments. I already feel better. Just needed that encouragement. :)
  • Like PPs said, no big deal :)  I had one with my last pregnancy at 6w.  I was actually kind of hoping for one this time around since I think it gives a clearer view, but they were able to do an abdominal on me at 8w.

    Good luck!

  • Being an IVF-er, I literally have had about 100 of these from all my cycles trying IVF. I remember how nervous I was at the beginning, but as PP have said, the technicians literally do it every day and don't evennnnn care! HAHA! So True. I just had one at 7w3D and was expecting trans vag and I was actually upset they gave me an abdominal one!!! I literally couldn't see anything except an EXTREMELY blurry blob. Last time this early I had a trans vag and got a great little pic of my son around 8 weeks. I didn't even ask because the entire picture looked like static. The only thing I could make out was the HB bc it was flickering. It was definitely disappointing because I was so excited to see my little peanut. So, my advice, be really happy to have a trans vag so you actually get to really see all the awesomeness that is your little bean in there!!! GOOD LUCK!!

  • It's not too bad, I had mine earlier this week. There's definitely a bit of pressure, but as others have said, getting to see the LO is plenty distracting. If you're nervous though, let the tech know. I know I definitely could have used some warning before she inserted the probe :)

  • I just came from my second one. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Lots of pressure but the minute I saw the little bean, I really didn't feel anything! I did have to go home and change after that though.. they put so much of that gel on the probe, it was everywhere! LOL. ;)

YES. As soon as the tech left the room, I grabbed a kleenex and wet wipe (they are in every room at the doctor's office). DH looked at me funny, and I just said, if you don't want to see me wipe, turn around.

  • I had a vaginal u/s a few years ago to check for fibroids. No biggie, like PP's have said. And I didn't even have a baby to distract me! It was kind of neat getting to see my innards, though.  ;)

  • That's just the way it is. They can't see anything abdominally until 10-12 weeks. At my doctors office they tried to be very discret, they are very used to doing this with an audience of significant others. I also had a vagibal ultrasound at my anatomy scan to check my cervix.
  • Honestly, I didn't even feel the thing.

  • coming from the IF world, these are NBD. AND- you get a better image of baby! Bonus! :) dont worry about it- you'll be too focused on what is about to pop up on the screen to bother with what they are doing down below.

  • Maybe this will help. I had my very first ever ultrasound in general this past Wednesday and they did transvaginal. It was MAGICAL. I could hear the heartbeat perfectly and see my amazing little miracle bean. They showed me where the brain is forming and where the legs and arms and head are.

The picture attached is one of the stills they gave me. I'm now at 8w3d.
  • I have my first ultrasound on Nov. 14 which is also a transvaginal one. I think that's just how they do it this early on. I was also nervous about this but these comments are making me feel a little better.

  • I had one, it isn't bad at all! Uncomfortable, yes. No more uncomfortable than your annual pap smear though! :) Good luck and congratulations!!
  • I just had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks 5 days and they didn't have to do it internally. I was told to come in with a full bladder so they could try it abdominally and if they couldn't see anything, they'd do it internally. It worked out! They could see my little one and everything else abdominally! Heartbeat and everything was great!
  • Yeah, I've had so many with IVF.  The first time I was like, you want me to stick that where?!  But it's really easy and it's not uncomfortable.  Bring a pantiliner, though; the stuff they goop it up with is plentiful!

  • I I had several transvaginal ultrasounds a few years ago when I had a cyst and fibroids that had to be surgically removed. It's not a big deal. Not even as bad as a pap test. And I had nothing fun to look at believe me. Definitely try to have an empty bladder though. That thing will make you need to pee like nothing else, and a full bladder can block the view.

If your husband is the kind who makes inappropriate jokes when he is nervous, please tell him not to. I have had a few dads make very uncomfortable comments during vag exams. I always assume it is out of nervousness but it still made me feel super icky. My u/s tech said they get weird comments sometimes too and it always makes the appointment super awkward

  • @kayladawn91‌ my US is also on Nov 14. Let's share our experience later that day!
  • I come from the IF world like @AlmostMom‌. I've literally had a vag cam u/s at least 2x a month since April. It almost makes me feel slutty how often I open my legs for a dildo like probe. But like PP's said it really isn't a big deal. It does cause a little bit of pressure going in (thats what she said) but you get such an amazing view of your little baby!! Don't be surprised if you get up and it looks like you peed. Literally, H asked me if I peed. I was like no did you see the amount of lube?! Anyway it's a great experience when you see your little bean! Good luck!!

  • I did spot red afterwards, don't be alarmed if you do! The cervix is very tender right now!

  • Ive literally had hundreds in the past 5 years it feels like. Its NBD. I know it feels crazy when you havent had it done but Im excited about ours. And like others said you get to see so much more! You can ask to insert it if you arent comfortable with them doing it. After doing IF treatments for so long and giving birth to one IF rainbow baby, Im like meh the whole world has been down there whats another? LOL
