$5.99 Nose Bleed

My sd is home sick today. She's feeling better but then she got a nose bleed. I've never had one so I kind of panicked but didn't let it show. It was gushing and gushing. I finally gave her a dark colored hand towel so she wouldn't see all the blood! I called my mom and she told me to put a cold wash cloth on the back of her neck and forehead and not to let her lean back and swallow the blood. It bled for almost a half hour.
Is there anything I should do to prevent it from happening again?
Was there something I should have done to make it stop sooner?
I want to be prepared if it happens again.

Thanks ladies. I feel so bad for her. She is so paranoid that it's going to start bleeding again.
DH told me to shove something up her nose while it was bleeding but all
I could think was that it would clot then when we pulled the tissue or whatever out it would start bleeding again. Maybe I'm wrong but that's my thought.
