Grandparent names - cute or annoying?

Re: Grandparent names - cute or annoying?

  • My daughter kind of picked her own. My parents are Gam and Pa and IL's are g-daddy (she's trying to say granddaddy) and granny.

  • I had a friend whose FIL insisted on being called Pop pop. Too bad her daughter couldn't say that and instead it came out poop poop! Seriously kids will come up with their own names. My nephew calls my dad Pappa and no one had ever referred to him as that until my nephew did.
  • @kaynix21‌ I have no idea! At this point, I don't know if she's still trying to be funny or if she's totally serious. I'm kind of scared she's serious though. All of these other names are sounding pretty good right now!

  • My mom is "Maia" (short for Mamaia, which means grandma in Romanian).. FIL will be "Poppa" (like his dad was to DH and siblings) and MIL will be "Nana" which I personally don't like.. I thought she'd want Grandma or Nonna, but whatever, that's what she wants and they won't be calling me that! Lol

  • Between my grandparents and the kids grandparents, we have 4 grandmas, 3 grandpas and a pop pop to try to keep track of.  When me or the kids mention 'grandma' someone always stops us and says 'wait, which one' at which point we have to go into a description of who the person lives with or what toys or pets they have in order to clarify.  Apparently this is highly entertaining to watch.

  • I always thought my kids would call their grandparents "grandma" and "grandpap"  but when my oldest dd(oldest grandchild) was about 14 months old she started calling my mom Mimi and it just kind of stuck.  Now all three of my mom's grand kids call her that.

~Mama to two daughters and baby #3 coming soon~
  • My MIL wants to be "mom mom" but i am saying no. She is convinced that's what her name will be. I don't want to sound crazy but I'm our babies mom.. Mom mom is to close to that for me. I don't want our baby calling her mama when learning to talk...
  • This will be be sides' first grandchild, but we're not insisting on super traditional. My maternal grandma was Nana, but my mom wasn't down with that, so she'll be Babushka (Yaya may be easier to say, but she didn't identify with the Greek side). Not sure about the Grandpa's yet, and MIL'S is already Dramma to our dog (substitute grandchild for now), so she'll probably be just Dramma.
One of my friend's father insisted on being called "Oompa Loompa" (he is built like a BEAR).
  • My parents are already "gramma and Grampa" by the older grand kids so we are following that. DS took to calling DHs parents "Baba and Yaya" and it's stuck.

I think a lot of times kids will come up with their own names regardless of what you or they may want to be called. It also makes it easier when there are already grandkids, at least in my family all grandchildren call the grandparents the same thing.

  • First, I think all those names are pretty normal grandparent names.  Second, I think most "weird" names started with whatever the kid ended up using, and there's nothing wrong with that.  My MIL wanted to be "grandmom" but when DD called her "mom-mom" then that's been it ever since.

On the other hand, my FIL wanted to be called Ziggy Pop.  I have no idea why...besides that his last name starts with Z?  I guess it's a pun on Iggy Pop?  SO since we are Jewish I first referred to him as Zaide Ziggy and then shortened it to Zaide (which is normal in Jewish circles), and that's what DD calls him now.  Bullet dodged.

My mom wants to be called "Boo Boo Kitty." Not sure why she's so stuck on that name, but even though we try to veto she's still sticking to it. Guess we have until May to convince her of something else! I refuse to call anyone Boo Boo Kitty.
Idk what happened to the quote box here....

    but why?!

  • I remember when I was growing up, there was a girl in sixth grade who called her grandma and grandpa "nana and papa" and I thought THAT was weird. I remember thinking she sounded immature saying those names.
Then my sister had kids and my mom wanted to be referred to as nana and t dad became papa, so I'm used to the names now, but I also never was the one saying them.
Now I just got married and my husband calls his grandpa Pap Pap as in PAP SMEAR! Wtf!!! I hate it! And everyone calls him that! So naturally now that I married in, I'm kind of a grand daughter and have to refer to him that way. It's sooooo weird to me!!!
That being said, my husbands dad will not be "Pap Pap" to my baby!
  • My grandparents were both called grandma and grandpa. I guess I'm a stick in the mud, but I prefer the classic names to nicknames. MIL chose Grammy. I had never heard of that nickname until she chose it, so it's an adjustment for me. FIL chose a cutsey, baby speak version of his first name.
Definitely with you on the classic names!! I actually had to stop reading this thread because it was getting too annoying. "cutesy" = BARFY.

We used the Ukrainian words for grandma and grandpa, so on both sides they were Baba Lastnname and Dido Lastname. My husband uses Grandma Firstname and Grandpa Firstname with his still-living grandparents (seriously who has grandparents at 36? Mine were all dead before I turned 20), which is okay, too.

  • I think some of these names are ok but some can be annoying. I know I was annoyed when I was pregnant with my first son and my ex-MIL insisted that he call her "grand mommy". According to her, she was too young to be a grandma. Smdh thank god that didn't stick.
  • Other titles are annoying, Grandma and Grandpa it is. Will the baby be confused because it has TWO grandmas….I don't know but I think she/he will make it. I have never had a debate with my inlaws about what they would be called but I think they were disappointed when I started calling them grandma and grandpa. I know my nephew and niece call them MeMaw and Peepaw but I JUST CAN'T.It kind of annoys me. If it's a southern thing, that's fine but we're sticking with grandma and grandpa. :)
To amend that though, I wouldn't mind if we said- Grandma Ally or Grandma DeeDee.

  • I think its sweet. And that grandparents should be allowed to choose their names.
My parents and inlaws are great (this doesn't apply to them) but sometimes it gets out of hand and becomes more trouble than it's worth.

  • I really wanted someone to be Oma and Opa  (German), but no one likes it...so alas my parents  are leaning towards plain Grandma and Grandpa, and my ILs  are leaning towards Nana and Papa.
