Insensitive Doctors

So I feel like I am whining, but I want to share my Dr. experience.

I went in for my first ultrasound at 8 1/2 weeks and found out it is twins..

The first and basically ONLY thing the OB said to me was "Gonna be a loooong pregnancy." Well no shit, Sherlock. I thought it was going to be a walk in the park. Then, when I asked him about safe depression meds because I had stopped mine (I have major depressive disorder and have been off and on meds for many years) He was just like "Yeah.. bad back, bad foot, and pregnant with twins you're gonna be depressed." Not because, ya know, I have a chemical imbalance in my brain or anything, but because I am having twins and am disabled! I was fuming by the end of the appointment. Started looking for a new OB the day after the visit.

Anyone else have issues with doctors who just don't seem to care, or maybe just don't know how to talk to pregnant women? You would think they would, though, seeing as how THEIR JOB is dealing with them...

Re: Insensitive Doctors

  • What a jerk! For something like a twin pregnancy (as opposed to a dr you see one time), you absolutely need someone supportive. I'm so sorry he wasn't! So glad you're looking for someone else.

  • I am glad to know I am not the only one who considers this to be jerk behavior, because my fiance liked him and thought he was funny. *rolls eyes*

  • Get a referral to a MFM specialist. They are used to treating patients with other conditions and multiples. Sorry your OB was such a jerk.

  • What a douche!! Not funny at all. I've always found better luck with women personally. I'm sure anyone you switch to will be better! Sorry you had to deal with that hon :(
  • Now is definitely the time to switch and get someone who is on your side and willing to partner with you to get these babies as far as you can in pregnancy!!

  • I am so thankful for the replies! I feel like I have been validated, because I seriously thought maybe I was just overly-sensitive (not that a pregnant lady would EVER be that, lol)

I am interviewing another Dr. as soon as my old Dr. office faxes my medical records. Been waiting a week, they said it takes 5-10 days which seems RIDICULOUS, but what am I gonna do..

I will look into a specialist, but I don't live in a large city or very near a large one, and our car is on it's last legs so it's just not feasible unless I can find one close by :(

  • Ack! Sorry you had that experience! Just FYI I am 36 weeks with twins, have stayed on my meds for depression (they are Class C) and have had less problems than a lot of women with a singleton! Seriously...the massive size/discomfort didn't really hit until the third trimester.

As for insensitive things doctors have said...

When I met with the high risk doctor for the first time (due to being anemic) she told me how I was bound to have more problems with an IVF pregnancy since they were "unnatural."

Not only was that insensitive and not based on fact, it was completely incorrect for my pregnancy. As I've said before, I've had fewer problems than I think most women with singletons do!

  • Ugh!! That would make me so frustrated. As soon as a doctor is an asshole to me or my kids I am out of there. Their services are too expensive for them to treat me or mine like crap.

  • What an ass! Switch doctors and write a yelp about that jerk! There are so many great OBs out there, you don't need one that makes you feel that way. And you aren't whining. Good luck!

  • Well, I am still waiting on them to fax my records so I can even have my first appointment with someone else. It has been 12 days -_- I called to ask the nurse a question because I was having cramps, and they had the nerve to rudely ask me "Well are you switching doctors?" THAT IS NOT WHY I CALLED and it's not really the issue right now as long as I am your patient just answer my freaking questions. Ugh. I will wait to write a review until I have switched docs, because I may end up having to still go to my next appointment with him on the 11th if I can't get in with someone else before then. :/

  • Yup. Absolutely time to find a new dr. And I was on Lexapro before, during and after my entire pregnancy so talk to your new dr or your psychiatrist about that. If you've been on them before now is not a good time to start messing around with not taking them.

    Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry you are going through this. I love my OB and have been with him for 20 yrs. He has even put his arm around my shoulders & let me cry. Good luck with the new doc. If you have any problems I would call the new office & see if they can make an exception to get you in sooner.
  • WOW. That guy was a huge asshole and you are 100% within your rights to dump him.
The new DR shouldn't need your records to schedule your appointment. If worse comes to worse, walk into your DRs office and have them physically HAND YOU your file. It'll be huge and they'll be pissed about it, but you have every right to possess your personal files. Then you can march them over to your new DR.

  • I have been bugging and bugging them..the new Dr. I want will NOT schedule me without my records..UGH. My appointment is tomorrow and if they don't get the records tomorrow they are going to the face the wrath of a pregnant woman and it is not going to be pretty.

On a side note, if anyone reads this, how often is it normal to have an ultrasound? I asked if they would be doing one tomorrow (I will be 11 weeks and 5 days) and they said I am not scheduled to have one. I just kind of assumed with a high risk pregnancy they would do more ultrasounds, but this doesn't seem to be the case with this Dr. office. :( I wants to see my babies.

  • I figured as much. I am just high risk and I really want to see the babies, especially since I am finally almost out of the scariest time-the first trimester.

  • With my OB I had an initial ultrasound at 7 weeks to double check twins and heartbeats. After that I didn't have another ultrasound until my anatomy scan at 20 weeks with my MFM. After that I got monthly ultrasounds with my MFM but not with OB. I now have weekly ultrasounds with my MfM starting at 34 weeks.

  • Well my appointment is in less than an hour. I am dreading it so much. UGH. I don't even want to see the Dr. at all, I just want to hear my babies' heartbeats, get my medical records, and GTFO.
