sizes for large newborns?

Based on a lot of suggestions (thanks, everyone!) I'm getting some GMD prefolds and workhorses to fill out my nb stash. I'm not due for another couple of weeks, so who knows how big it will be, but my first was 9 pounds. Does it make sense to get newborn size, knowing that this one could be that big, too, or go straight to size small? Does it make sense to get some of each, or are they big enough for one-size pockets when they outgrow the nb size? I currently have a toddler in one size pockets, so if I do more laundry we could probably get by with what we have once the new one is big enough for them. I'm not completely in love with what we're using for him, though, so I wouldn't be opposed to trying something different.

Thank you!

I started with small prefolds. My baby was 8 pounds but grew very fast. If you don't mind the extra bulk then it should be fine.

Edited to add that at 8 weeks and 13 pounds I can still snappi a small prefold on her.

  • Small prefolds will be bulky but could be ok.  Maybe get a mix but more smalls just in case baby isn't as big as you think.

Our snapless NB workhorses fit for a very long time - maybe 10 weeks? We skipped smalls and went straight to medium.

  • I would go with smalls as long as you have covers that fit. Smalls will last until OS pockets fit, nb might not.

  • Small prefolds are still too long for my 11+ pounder. I suggest newborn unless you want them bulky.

  • You can fold down the back; yes it will be bulky but if you're looking to save $$ you can do it. If you decide to get some GMD orange edges, you'll be able to sell them for nearly what you paid for them so it won't be a total loss, either.

Really, you could just do the best of both worlds and get flats.
