Glucose screening test

Hello fellow mommies

Looking for a little advice or tricks or encouragement. Or something

I go for my glucose test tomorrow ( you know that lovely orange drink)

I struggle with drinking stuff like that. Always have! I have done it before ( my last pregnancy I did it, and later, the next day actaully, found out I lost the baby) so that's playing a toll on my mind as well

I also gag and spit up over everything. So I'm extra nervous

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or tricks or anything for me to get threw this. Or get more confidence. Or anything!!
Thanks moms

Re: Glucose screening test

  • I took my test last weekend. I actually didn't find the drink too bad, just like very concentrated sugary kool aid. they gave me a choice of orange or fruit punch, so I chose fruit punch.

I just drink it is slowly as I can (they give you 5 minutes, use the whole 5 minutes, don't just chug it), and ask when you are able to drink water after you finish it. They told me I could drink water after the first 30 mins, and that helped.

try not to pysch yourself out too much, I didn't find it that bad.

  • Just drink slow, and eat normal the day before. Some women try to “trick” the test by eating nothing sugary for several days, but that can sometimes make you flunk the test by sending you body in sugar shock.

    Other than that—GL!

  • How are you ladies already having these? Mine isn't until Jan!
I was tested early because my mom had gestational diabetes, and currently has type 2. And I am a bit overweight, so I tested early. I got the results back today and I don't have GD, but I am going to eat healthy and exercise to make sure I don't get it later on.

I was able to lay down as soon as I drank it a few weeks ago {PCOS and overweight, so it was recommended to take early}. I drank it and then laid down on my left side for the entire hour. It helped a ton. I didn't feel nauseous until well after.

Also, it helped that it was ice cold.

And by well after, I mean after the blood draw, on the elevator on the way down from the lab.

I was confused too. I double checked I didn't randomly end up on the March 2015 board or setting. It makes sense with her history though.

Last time I was lucky enough that my office allows us to take the drink home. I made that thing so cold that it dulled the flavor. Mine was also fruit punch flavor so it wasn't too bad actually. If I had to drink an orange one I'm not sure how I would have gotten through it.

  • Thanks so much. Last time it was cold. So I assume this time it will be too!!!
    I'll try doing smaller sips!

    The taste wasn't too bad
But it was the feeling afterwards that got me
And this time I'm way more gaggy
    So I'm scared
I'm gonna try to stop thinking about it
    But it's haunting me haha

Where I live I don't think they allow us to lay after. Or have a place to
Just sit in a crowed wait room

So that's another fear. Throwing up in front of everyone!

Maybe I'll try a straw too

    Thank you guys!
    I'm so nervous

But after this. Hopefully it's smoother sailing and I feel in the "safe zone"

We don't have options. Only orange haha
  • I threw up at my last glucose test so I feel ya! It sucks. One thing that helped me was, even though they wouldn't let me drink water they let me swish after to get the terrible taste out of my mouth. Good luck!!

Mine also lets us swish, this helps a lot.

  • Take your time, drink it cold, and good luck. I had more issues with it just sitting in my stomach right after so I brought some pretzels to munch after the test was done to help my stomach not be so cranky

  • Thanks! I think I have to get it in my head to use the full 5 minutes
I'm def. One to chug it to get it over with!!

It's not very big anyway. I don't think. As far as I remember. I can't remember how much it was
But I don't think it was a ton
  • A friend told me that you don't have to take it if you don't want to.  Of course some women want to, but does anyone know what you would do if you didn't want the glucose test and your doctor wanted you to do it?
  • I have to take it early as well because I had GD with my first baby. I keep postponing because i'm so nauseous still that i swear i'll throw up. good luck all!

    I did it this morning!
It wasn't too bad. I worried more then it was bad. All but the last sip wasn't bad for me. And I don't do liquid stuff well so if I can do it, anyone can!!!
You feel so proud walking out too!!

    You can do it!
  • I have heard it is easier if you can mix it with seltzer/club soda (basically a carbonated water with no additional sugars) instead of mixing it with water.  I did a 1 hr test during my PCOS testing, and it was disgusting, but it was just mixed with plain water.  Either way - GOOD LUCK!

  • See if they have the fruit punch - it did not leave the same after taste or make me as queasy as the orange. Try to get a good night sleep - my m/s is worse if I'm tired. GL!

My doctor said if you refuse, you are categorized automatically as if you had GD and have to do all the education, sugar checks, diet, and extra appointments. I have a really hard time with blood draws - my blood pressure always crashes, even laying down. They said there wasn't an alternative. Then last pregnancy, I had failed by 1-3 points in 2 of 4 times, with other 1 normal and 1/2 draws actually being dangerously low, while super sick with virus. So I re did it. Came back totally fine.

Eta: while I hate the test and think they should do one of the more realistic alternatives that exist, if you do have GD, it is important to know. If not for yourself, for your LO.

  • Bumping. Because I failed my first one. And I have to go back again tomorrow for the 2 hour long one.

    I'm upset
It's all for the baby. And that's why I'm trying to be a brave girl. And do it. And I will do. Because of the baby

But it doesn't make me any less nervous the second time... 1 week later!

I hate drinking liquid medical stuff. I don't do well... I'm so scared
    I won't sleep again tonight
  • Of there's no history in your family or you your self I was told you can see no to the test

Goodness, I can't imagine refusing given that 40 percent of GD cases occur with no known risk factor (I looked up that stat when my cousin had it in her last pregnancy despite not being at risk).

  • I don't know if I CAN take the test. I'm allergic to corn and all derivatives, and that drink is a corn festival. I told my mw this early on and I've been trying to find alternatives, but not having much luck. Has anyone heard of alternative ways to test for GD?

  • I actually like the orange one. Warm... haha
  • I'm pretty sure that if your doctor agrees to it, you can log your food for a week and take your blood sugar regularly with a glucose monitor - you can buy a cheap one at most pharmacies. I plan to do this and my midwife is on board because I am very intentional with eating natural, fresh, and organic and would never drink that much sugar all at once if I wasn't pregnant and definitely not now. Just an idea... I've seen this pop up before, maybe on the health and fitness board for people who eat paleo not wanting to do the glucose test?
  • @squeezebean There are alternatives, but they aren't as accurate. But maybe you would feel more comfortable doing one of those tests as opposed to none?

Some alternatives are mentioned here. https://evidencebasedbirth.com/gestational-diabetes-and-the-glucola-test/

I'm with @Starbuck128‌, you can ask you dr if you can be tested but not drink the drink. Basically all of my friends have been doing this and their drs just have them do the finger prick test every hour for a day or so and that is all!

You do have options, just ask.

  • I honestly liked the drink with my last pregnancy. I really craved sugar (cake, pie, ice cream, etc) throughout and normally don't have a sweet tooth. This time all I want is chili, so I am not expecting it to taste so good. I had the orange drink last time and it was cold and refreshing:)
