Halloween and dogs

This will be our first time being home on Halloween and our first time having a dog. A crazy dog at that. Any tips on how to cope? I know she'll be a nutcase that day and we'll have guests too. My anxiety is at an all time high.

Re: Halloween and dogs

  • We either close the dog in a bedroom or sit on the front porch during ToT.
  • Do you have an attached garage? We keep our dog inside and sit in our garage to pass out candy. It helps because he can't really see anyone coming up the driveway.

  • This will be our second Halloween with two dogs. One of them is awfully chill, but the other is really territorial. I'll take them out on a long walk earlier in the afternoon and then once H gets home from work they'll go into our bedroom (everything's picked up for them and they can get on/under the bed). We have an enclosed front porch (kind of a sunroom thing) so what we do is close the door from that to the main house and we sit in the sun porch with the door open and hand out candy. That way there's no doorbell ringing/knocking. If we didn't have the porch we'd probably set up outside.

  • I plan on going on a bike ride with her and I'm hoping my friend brings her dog so she'll be occupied being around another pup?
  • I would say that the main point is do not overreact. And keep in mind that it's impossible to change a dog's behavior quickly. I really love Cesar Millan show, it offers a lot of valuable advice. Just check a couple of videos on YouTube and you will see what I mean. Happy Halloween!
  • Can your friends not bring their dog? I mean, keeping two dogs contained and preventing escapes while they play and you open the door three dozen times an hour sounds like hell.

I'd try to give her a lot of exercise early in the day. Then I'd crate her or confine her in a room in the back of the house. Play a TV or a radio in there fairly loudly. Give her a kong or bone stuffed with frozen food. Leash her in that room before you head out to let her pee. You don't want an overexcited dog running free on Halloween. So many dogs get hit!

Today, soak food in water till its soft and stuff it into a kong. Make several if you can. Then put that in the freezer. Give that to her instead of her dinner. If she finishes it, smear some peanut butter way up inside the kong.
