Name spelling...

Okay I looked around even on the baby name board but thought I'd ask you ladies.

My husband said he really likes the name Evelyn for a girl. Then he said let's both spell it separately then see if we come up with the same spelling (we did this with our sons name). Anyway we both spelt it "Evelyn", my sister was there and spelt it "Evelynn". We've been going back and forth on which is the proper or common way to spell the name and yeah it's so split. Then my good friend said "Evelin". Anyway I don't want my daughter growing up always being asked "how do you spell it?"
My name is Jacklyn and I get a lot of "Jacqueline"or"Jaclyn"
My sons name is Everett and we get a lot of people adding an "e" at the end "Everette"

So first off how would you spell the name "Evelyn"? Anyone else running into this name spelling issue?

Re: Name spelling...

  • I have only ever seen it spelled Evelyn. I don't know enough about to names to know if it is the only proper or common spelling.

My husband and I are considering the name Gwendolyn, which can also be spelled Gwendolen. We are leaning toward the -lyn ending though both are normal spellings I think.

  • @BitsyBelle84‌ The name Gwendolyn is pretty. I'd spell it with the "-lyn".

Evelyn. The extra 'n' is superfluous and not needed and Evelin looks like "javelin" to me. It's a lovely name. And I would never add an "e" to the end of Everett because that would be a totally different pronunciation. You are correct in your spellings. :)
Not to mention that the extra E at the end would make Everett feminine and not masculine. Spelling matters!

My bestie named her daughter Evelyn, standard spelling. I think it's beautiful.
  • Evelyn. Plus, I would definitely never add an "e" after Everett.

Evelyn. the extra N at the end makes no sense to me. Also, if you and your H are spelling it the same way, then it shouldn't matter what other people are saying.

edit to add: I LOVE the name Evelyn, and always wanted to name my someday daughter that. but since H doesn't love it.. I am sort of over it personally for my own daughter, since we both love another name even more. but i still really love the name.. a lot.

  • Evelyn. The end. Yoonique spellings are a disservice to your child.
  • Just adding another agreement with Evelyn, never seen it spelled any other way. Also spelling it Everette definitely makes it feminine.

Also, Evelyn is a beautiful name! :)

  • I love the name Evelyn - it was my awesome grandma's middle name. Never seen it spelled with 2n's. As an oddly named person go with the most common spelling.
  • Thanks ladies. I looked it up and saw a few variations in spelling, however I do agree Evelyn must be the most common. My BFF suggested that next time I'm at Starbucks or somewhere that asks for your name, to say "Evelyn" and see how they spell it. However if we go with the name, I'd spell it what I consider common "Evelyn".
