Cloth Diapering

poop and rashes

Hi! I've been lurking for a while and you guys always seem to have great advice.

We are almost constantly battling a rash on my 4 month old- specifically right around her booty hole (butt hole, anus?? IDK the nice way to say it)...  I always change her immediately after a poop, but it seems like her poop causes a rash as soon as it touches her skin.

We've tried Earth Mama Angel Baby and coconut oil, but those don't seem to actually protect her skin. We also have California Baby and Babo something but they both have zinc and are causing staining and repelling on her wipes (which I've been using as a liner to protect the diapers). Are there any CD safe creams that actually form a barrier? Also, any ideas on what could be causing the rash?

  • Yea.. I'm thinking possibly food allergies, but the pediatrician says it's not likely and won't really hear me out. I know some of you guys have experience with that.. How did you know in the beginning that there was a problem?

Food allergy is possible, but first thing I would guess is food acidity. Cut oranges, tomatoes, peppers, and other highly acidic foods for a few weeks and see if it helps.

Edited: f-o-o-d = food autocorrect. It's a real word, promise.

  • Thanks TJ- I'll try that.

I always pat dry and give her tons of nakie booty time. Recently she poops like 20 times a though. Does waxelene work as a barrier? None of the oily CD safe creams seem to do much.
  • Have you tried Grandma Els?  It's a cd safe barrier cream... I've used it even without a liner without issues.

  • I would say if it's just right around her anus it could just be acidic poop. Limiting those foods will help but might not necessarily mean a true, lifetime allergy

  • I haven't tried Grandma El's, but I will. Is it safe to assume it's the poop not the diapers causing the rash? I assume if the diapers were causing a problem it would be where the skin and diaper touch, right?
  • A stick would be nice, touching zinc gives me the heebie jeebies...
  • When that happens here (which admittedly is not often) one application of Grandma El's clears it up. I think Waxalene would make an excellent barrier.

  • It's also a good idea to look up the pH of any fruits you are consuming. Oftentimes the sugar can mask the acidity. DS has gotten a rash on the rare occasion when he has gone overboard on blueberries and apples.
  • Just curious why zink gives you the heebie jeebies?

  • I didn't even consider that fruit could be a problem. That's probably what's causing the crazy pooping. I've been raiding the neighbor's fruit trees a bit too much.
  • Oh and no clue about zinc. I think I must be nuts. Touching it gives me the same feeling as nails on a chalk board. And it always irritates my nose and throat. I trim my nails before using the diaper cream because I can't stand when I have to scrape it out from under my nails lol
  • Rash around the anus does sound like food allergies/intolerances.

This was my thought too. My daughter gets really red from poops no matter how quickly I get a new diaper on her but she has really bad reflux so it is the acid that causes it.

I use CJs for cream and it does a pretty good job with it.
