2nd Trimester

low amniotic fluid

I had my first sonogram last tue, I was 19 weeks. My doctor just called me saying my amniotic fluid looked like it might be a little low. So they scheduled me another ultra sound with a specialist for Nov 7th. The nurse said it wasn't an emergency and not to worry, but being,my first pregnancy I'm scared to death. She said it could be just that they have my weeks wrong and maybe I'm not as far along as they think. Anyone have any history with this or any advice? I'm trying not to stress but it's so hard and I just want to cry.

Re: low amniotic fluid

  • I would try your best not to stress too much about it, and make sure you are staying fully hydrated. 80-100 oz of water a day. Dehydration is the only factor within your control that could affect the fluid level. Usually it is caused by another factor though. At the next ultrasound they will mostly be looking at how the placenta is working and the urinary tract of the baby to figure out why the fluid may appear low. How are you calculating your dates? Sometimes those can be off by a week or two and that really changes things, unless you were tracking your cycles and know when you conceived.

I'll be thinking of you, let us know how the next appointment goes. I can imagine this is scary, but it is out of your hands and you have a doctor who will do what s/he can to keep your baby healthy.

  • I wasn't tracking my cycle, I had just gotten off bc so I was irregular still. So they went off my last menstrual period. But even when I first saw the doctor and had a vaginal ultra sound done they said it was very very early in the pregnancy. I'm trying not to stress and keeping hydrated.
