Speaking of birthdays....gift giving?

DD has started preschool and is attending a birthday for one of her classmates. I think they are friendly at school but they've never had a playdate or anything so I don't know much about this girl. Two questions (one in friendly poll form!): how much do you typically spend on a gift for preschool classmates? Do you have a go-to gift for kids this age you don't know personally?? Thanks!

    My go to gift, when I don't know them very well, is some sort of blocks set - lego or duplex

    I tend toward nice hard cover picture books.

    Books or anything educational are always my go to gifts. Can't go wrong with a book that encourages their learning curve. They are "schoolmates" after all. :)
