How early for BLW?

Ok so my baby is only a little over 3 months and he already seems to be showing interest in food.  Obviously I would not give him food right now. But he tried grabbing my food several times and got mad when I pulled him away. He stared and me and DD the whole time we were eating like he wanted to know where his food was.  I didn't do BLW with O, she was FF after 2 months and then did the whole rice cereal at 4 months and all that other crap.  This time I will not be giving rice cereal.

I will be going back to work at beginning of January so he will be 5.5 months then...I plan on doing partial weaning.  Nursing in the am and pm and supplementing formula during the day.  So I guess my question is since I'm not doing the rice cereal, how early can he eat fruits and veggies?

  • We don't give solids before 6 months. This is something you should talk to your ped about.
Well when I was there last time she said if EBF, then no solids until 6 months.  But of course she also mentioned the rice cereal and at 4 months when FF, etc.  I really like her, just wonder how she much she knows about BLW.
I guess since I plan on starting formula in December, that's why I was wondering.

BLW is designed to follow baby's cues.  But they are adamant that baby be able to sit up on their own, grab the food on their own, and put it into their own mouths.

But you also need to watch your baby.  P is 5m, she can sit up, and anything I hand her goes directly into her mouth.  She is really good at grabbing things, and seems REALLY interested in my food.  She is constantly grabbing my plates and cups and trying to get at my food.  But she just really doesn't seem ready for solids.  That all seems more like teething behavior to me, and I don't think she really wants solids.  She really just wants the booby.
Lol to the bolded!  Yeah it's been such a long time since I had a baby and I'm doing things a bit differently this time around, so thought I would see what everyone else is doing.

  • We'll be waiting until 6 months, and probably plus a week since my husband and I are going away for our anniversary the weekend C turns 6 months and I don't think my in laws will be up to attempting BLW/ solids while baby sitting all weekend.
I'm about half way through the BLW book and I'm not 100% sure of we will do BLW, but I am sure we are waiting to 6 months. That was our plan (we planned to BLW) and our doctor also told us to wait 6 months for any solids no matter what/how we were feeding.

I think we might just follow the Canada food guide for introducing solids. It's similar to BLW but a bit more open to different textures of good and some feeding. I am still in research mode though.

  • If you don't think your pedi is up to date on BLW, or even if you just want to know more, I highly recommend reading the BLW book and doing some of your own research.  Just because they grab for something doesn't mean they've lost the gag reflex and are ready to eat.

I did a mix of BLW and purees so I used the www.wholesomebabyfood.com website for the puree part.  But I think it could be helpful with BLW too.  It has great info about nitrates, safe preparation/storage, and which foods to avoid until 1 (or after).

  • Hey @theultimateSAK - speaking of BLW do you BLW with your kids?  With E we didn't worry about 3 day waits, or only one food per day, or any of that junk, we just fed her what we ate (just no dairy.)  But with P's unknown sensitivities, the ped (who admittedly knows nothing about food sensitivities/allergies) suggested we adhere strictly to one food at a time, 5 days in between, keep a journal.  Can this still be considered BLW?  How did you do it?  Feel free to PM me if you don't want to MK-jack Amore's thread.  I prefer to MK-jack, but whatever.

Guess I should do more research as well.  At the very least, I know if I decide on purees, I will make my own.

  • 6 months is also bc of the gut. Not just bc they can get the food in their mouths. There are holes to allow for nutrients to get through, you want them to close first.

This. M grabbed at non-food items with total interest earlier than six months. He didn't want to eat them.

  • We started at about 5- 5.5 months with our ped's approval.  N was a big boy and was showing the signs of readiness, so we asked about it and got the OK.  We did BLW with the occasional homemade puree.
