Cloth Diapering

CD Diaper Bag

Sorry to ask so many questions, but what do you normally pack into a diaper bag? Both diapering related and in general. I've been looking at checklists but it appears people expect the diaper bag to be a full on-the-go infant pharmacy and salon. Is this really necessary for just normal errand runs? What do you keep in your bag?

Re: CD Diaper Bag

  • My normally stocked bag:
2 pocket diapers for the toddler
5 prefolds and 2 covers for the newborn
    Dry wipes & spray bottle
    Change of clothes for both
    Nursing cover
    Bib
    Nb hat
    Snappi
    Sample size CJs

  • Essentials:
3-5 diapers (this is for a toddler for half to full day -- you probably need more for an infant)
    wet bag
    stick of diaper cream
Pre-moistened wipes in a small wetbag
    tube or bottle of sunscreen
small tube or pot of DS's eczema lotion
    changing mat
sometimes a handful of dry wipes for cleaning up misc. messes

    Extras (depends on the day):
    bottle of water
    2-3 books or toys
    snacks

We did EBF for most of the first year, so never needed to carry bottles or formula -- just a breastfeeding cover. And later on part of my weaning strategy was to only BF at home, so we stopped carrying the cover (he wouldn't nurse under it by that point, anyway).

  • I always have my bag packed to the brim and I really need to get rid of some things. If I'm just running into a store with her I usually will bring the bag but leave it in the car. Day trips are another story. I don't need a lot of what I have in there but I would rather have something and not need it than wish I had it.

  • Usually 2 cloth diapers, wet bag, sample tub of CJs, all purpose blanket, sippy cup with water, and some snacks for the LO.  Food keeps him quiet and happy.  A cup of coffee or bottle of water for me, and a small reusable grocery bag.  I usually have a disposable or two in there too since they don't take up much room and can come in handy sometimes.

My diaper bag is also my handbag, so I've got my hand bag stuff in there too.

I usually carry 2-3 AIOs, wipes, a small wetbag, a change of clothes, burp cloth, nursing cover, and my wallet. The changing pad is too bulky so I also carry a thin receiving blanket to lay over surfaces. I usually have my water and sunglasses, but I don't carry much else for me personally.

I also don't carry the bag around with me to run errands, I just grab my wallet and leave everything else in the car.

ETA: I also leave a disposable or two in the bag all the time just in case I forget to grab a diaper when I'm leaving... I've done that a few too many times.
  • I keep the big diaper bag stocked with the following:

    small wetbag
back-up cover and two prefolds that I don't love
    disposable wipes
sample size of CJs diaper cream
toddler sized prefold to use as a changing pad
    extra change of clothes
    two pairs of socks
    bib
back-up paci (when my LO was using a paci)
    hand sanitizer
    lotion
    nursing cover
    extra receiving blanket

Then before we leave for a longer outing I'll add in more CDs, sippy cup, snack, etc.

For short outings I just stuff a small wetbag, one CD, and some wipes maybe a sippy cup and snack in my purse or the small diaper bag.  I have a toddler though.  He only poops once or twice a day & I know when to expect it.  So we can get away with bringing much less than when he was younger.

  • This is the stuff you guys keep in your diaper bags all the time? Even if you're just running out for an hour or two to run some errands? ETA: unless I am going somewhere for an all day event or doing something out of my ordinary life where I'm not sure what to expect, I have a diaper for each kid, wet bag, hopefully some wipes, and an EpiPen.I usually throw my wallet in before we go too.
2 diapers for each kid, wet bag, dry wipes, and some disposable wipes, one outfit for each kid.

Then I toss in a sippy cup, pouch, and snack grabber with dry snacks.  My wallet and phone are thrown in as well.

If we are out for the day, I usually take the time to unpack the whole bag and make sure I have everything I need.

If I really need something, our area has a ton of Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and Target stores that I can stop in and pick something up.

  • I'm a simple one too.  Diapers, wipes, wetbag, extra outfit for the little one (she's a spitter.)  Sometimes I have a blanket in there, sometimes I don't.  For myself I throw in my wallet, cell phone, and chapstick.  I keep hand sanitizer in the car, and a plastic (gasp!) grocery bag for emergencies.

yes, because an hour or two always ends up longer, and I have had days where we went to storytime and didn't end up coming home for 8 hours. Also because it is easiest to keep it consistantly stocked so i know what is in there.

  • Here is what we pack:

-1 prefold per hour (we never use that many, so it is a safe bet that we will have enough!)
    -1-2 extra cover(s)
-1 extra full outfit (socks & hat included!)
-1 large swaddle blanket (to use for tummy time, nursing cover, etc.)
    -1 burp cloth

Things that stay in the bag (we use a Jansport backpack):
    -changing pad
    -disposable wipes
    -2 wet bags
    -2 bottles of hand sanitizer
    -2 snappis

DD is only 5 weeks old, so we don't add any toys yet but I plan on keeping some fun activities in there once she gets older.

Currently we EBF so we do not need bottles/ice packs. Once I go back to work, DH will keep a cool bag with some bottles of pumped milk on ice in one of the pockets.

I have a convertible purse that is the size of a large wallet. It holds my phone and 2 chap sticks. Usually I remove the shoulder strap and toss it in one of the smaller pouches.

  • If we are just running a quick errand I just throw a diaper and some wipes in a wet bag.

In the main diaper bag, though:
    -wet bag
    -flats and a spare cover
    -changing pad
-a mini thing of coconut oil
    -cloth wipes
-peri bottle of water for wipes
    -spare top for baby
    -extra nursing pads
    -a&a swaddling blanket
    -mr fuddlewuddle
    -my wallet

  • We did disposable on the go with the other two, but the basics in my bag were the same as my purse plus a few diapers, wipes, flannel lap pad, baby toy or two, and a change of clothes. If there was room I added baby powder, more baby toys, and more diapers.

As they got older, I replaced the clothes (since we had less blow outs once we started solid foods) with snacks and a sippy cup for water.
  • I have two backpacks, small and large.

For quick errands around town I grab the small one:
    1 diaper
    wipes
    wet bag
    changing pad

For longer excursions, the large one:
multiple dipes (depending how long we'll be out)
2 sm, 1 med wt bag
change of clothes for baby and shirt for me
    changing pad
    wipes
    toys
    snacks
    blanket

  • If you were to pick up my bag on any given day you would find:
    1 PF diaper
    1 sposie
    disposable wipes
    wet bag
    burp cloth
    nursing cover
change of clothes (1 for each child)
    Soffie the Giraffe
    2 trains
    2 snack bars
2 grab and go sticker/coloring books

If I know we will be gone longer I throw in more diapers.  I have the disposable diaper in there because we use PF, and if the cover gets it and I don't have a spare in the bag, I am in trouble.  I also used to carry a small first aid kit in there, but have since moved it to the stroller.
