Cloth Diapering

Fitteds?

Hello, I am working on building a newborn stash. I have plenty of diaper service quality organic cotton prefolds (I got them used from a diaper service for only $1 each). But I was thinking of getting some Green Mountain Diapers Workhorse Fitteds, too, for containing newborn breastfed poo blowouts overnight and for public outings. I was hoping about 6 fitteds would be sufficient. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? I'm a first time mom so I've limited idea what to expect.

Re: Fitteds?

  • It really depends.... We usually recommend 36 changes total for EOD washing. I like to pack 4 diapers for #2 when we're out, but he doesn't poop as often as his brother did. Plus, I could use one of his broter's diapers if I had too. I used to pack 6 diapers when we were out with #1 as a NB. Also, a NB can easily wake up 3+ times a night, using up your 6 for EOD washing. If needing to use your prefolds MOTN or while out is NBD, then 6 should be fine. Otherwise, maybe more?

  • I've been practicing my prefold technique and on a still doll I can a great fit in about a minute. Lol I am hoping that years of oragami as a pastime prepares me slightly for performing on a squirming baby. Probably not but I can hope, right? At this particular moment I am not intimidated by having to use prefolds while out. So maybe I will stick to 6 for now and add later if I need/want? GMD seems to ship pretty fast. And I am also worried about baby girl outgrowing the NB size too early and needing to upsize, not that a couple extra GMDs would really break the bank.
  • I would have loved to have 1-2 dozen fitteds in my NB stash, but we were still in the trial stages with CD at that point, and I don't think I would have been able to fill out my NB stash fast enough given the timing of our trial.

Origami experience is actually really helpful when you venture into the world of flats.
  • @ovenrack can you link the GMD facebook page? All I can find is their official page.
  • From my experience, the newborn workhorse fitteds last longer than the newborn prefolds did.  So I wouldn't worry too much about growing out of them super fast.  Plus they have excellent resale value.  However that being said, you can always order more if you find that 6 isn't enough.  I think I only had 6, but I ended up just doing prefolds overnight because I was bad about leaving my fitteds hung up in the laundry room to finish drying, so they were never handy MOTN.
If you like origami, definitely look into flats and/or flour sack towels (FSTs.)  I ended up loving them too.

  • Six is probably ok for just MOTN use, but I'd get more if you want to use them while you're out or when you have someone over to help with baby. I had about 15 fitteds and LOVED them. I ended up using them more than anything else when they were available. I had 6 GMD NB snap less and they lasted for a lot longer than the NB prefolds did.

  • There are also places on etsy where you can send your prefolds and have them turned into fitteds. Depending on how many you have.
