Any other lifters?

I lift pretty regularly (novice lifter, only been for the past 1.5 years), but lately I've been really scared to continue! I've only hit the gym for arms once in the past 5 weeks!! I'm going crazy! But I keep thinking to myself that if anything happens I would blame myself 10000% and don't feel that it's worth it.

I NEED to get back in there. Any fellow lifters who might know from experience which lifts are safe and which are not?? Thanks!

Re: Any other lifters?

  • I am a FTM as well. I have been lifting for about 8 months and I've stopped going to the gym all together. I'm so tired all the time that I don't have the energy to do it. I want to get back to lifting because I was in the best shape of my life but I can't muster up the energy to do it after I work all day.

  • I was on a 12 week bodybuilder.com program this summer and once I found out I was pregnant, I really dropped my weights down. Unfortunately I had an early miscarriage (definitely not from working out bc I only got to the gym like twice between the time I found out and when I miscarried). So I haven't been in the gym since August. Terrible. I want to start back up this week but I don't think I'll be lifting any weights til I talk to my doc or one of the trainers there who is a mom. I think for now I'll keep it to light jogging or probably the elliptical and maybe some 5/7 lb weights for biceps/triceps. I'll let you know if I find out some useful info!

  • As long as you have a normal healthy pregnancy. It is healthy to keep doing all the same activities you were doing before you got pregnant. Trust me, you will want all those muscles strong when it comes time to push that baby out. I did pilates and kettle bells until 8 months with my last and I was so thankful to have that abdominal strength for birth.
The first thing the nurse said to me after my daughter was born was " look at how flat your stomach is!" I could have kissed her.
Just trust your gut, your body will tell you when to slow down or modify.
  • I understand being concerned about something happening and blaming yourself because I am totally the same way! There's mixed information about working out while pregnant (granted most of the anti-workout literature I've found seems to be dated but still concerning to me). Have you spoken to your doctor about your concerns? Maybe s/he can give you some guidelines on what to follow. I had my first appointment this past week and my doctor was very reassuring about working out and it made me feel more comfortable as long as I didn't overdo anything.

  • Same boat; FTM snd I'm missing the workouts/schedule i kept pre-preg.
I'm hoping to get back in 2nd trimester when my anxiety/worry and nausea (hopefully) go down.

  • Hey there! I've been doing Olympic lifting along with running, yoga, and split routines for over a year now and I've continued my routines as normal except I've pulled back on the weight a bit. I run out of breath pretty easily lately so I definitely don't push it like I used to. I listen to my body but aim to maintain my routine for as long as I can. Don't stop, it'll help your labor and help your body bounce back after baby! :)
