Chipped tooth :(

edited October 2014 in May 2013 Moms
LO is chipped his front tooth last night at the end of his bath.  I was right there, inches away and he didn't even fall, he just lunged for a toy that he had thrown from the tub and somehow he hit his mouth on the side of the tub.   Ugh.   He didn't seem to be in too much pain as there was minimal tears but I definitely feel bad about it.

I went ahead and bought this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036ZZQM8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  and another thing to pad the faucet.   Hopefully, that will make things a little safer.

It is a small chip but I would definitely like to get it fixed even though I know it will fall out one day anyway.  Mainly, I think I will just always feel bad about it when I see him smile unless we get it filled in.    But, he is 16 months, fidgety and definitely still has stranger danger so I am worried that it could be traumatic taking him to the dentist for this.

I am going to call the dentist tomorrow, but I am wondering does anyone have any experience fixing a chipped tooth?  How do you think this would go for a young toddler?

Thanks for your help, ladies!

No experience with a chipped tooth but DD did knock her four front top teeth loose. She was so terrified at the dentist that she laid there frozen in the chair so at least the dentist could look. Good luck tomorrow. Eta: she was about 20-21 months

  • DD1 chipped her tooth when she was 3.  I have no idea how it even happened. I took her to the dentist and they gave us a couple of options, smoothing it, or using some type of filler on it.  We decided the filler was kind of a waste of time since she'd lose the tooth within a few years.  We did have it smoothed because it had a little bit of a jagged edge, and we didn't want her to cut her tongue on it, or something.  It was no big deal, it took less than 5 minutes.  But, at three she was able to sit still, and we could explain to her what's going on.  I'm not sure about a 16 month old.  If it's purely cosmetic, I'd probably just let it go.

  • A chipped tooth for a 1 year old will either be smoothing it out to make it look even, or a bit of composite filling to add so it's even.... would depend on how bad it's chipped. Pediatric dentists are good at dealing with wiggly, squirmy kids.

  • Oh no, I hope he is ok.
  • Sorry to hear that.  My niece knocked out her two front teeth around the same age when the stroller she was in tipped forward.  Agree that pediatric dentists are awesome with the kids....I hope it goes well.

  • Good luck! K took a tumble when he was just learning to walk and chipped a tooth. The dentist wasn't concerned since it isn't too noticeable and doesn't bother him. Good reminder about tub accessories too.

  • Ds2 has a chipped front tooth but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I'll show the pedi at his well visit but I'm not that concerned. My dentist told me that baby teeth are meant to be really destructible since the adult teeth basically destroy them....or something like that. I forget how she put it.
  • Thanks, guys!  I haven't been able to contact the dentist yet.  I keep getting their VM.     This experience has also reminded me again about the dangers of the bathtub.
