What to do about hip pain?

Hi all,
I am having a hard time sleeping without pain in my hips. The side I'm sleeping on gets pretty painful, and the constant flipping is disturbing my sleep and not really helping. I've tried putting a pillow between my legs but it doesn't really do anything (although that could be because I can't keep it in place). Any suggestions? Is this something a snoogle could help with? Thanks!

Re: What to do about hip pain?

  • I've had this with all 4 pregnancies.  I grin and bear it.  Unfortunately, nothing I've tried helps.  It feels like a hot poker is drilling into the hip I'm laying on.  I just switch sides.

  • Massage too. If the muscles are all cramped, it's going to take some gentle kneeding to get them to relax again.
  • The Snoogle doesn't help, but a bigger foam pillow between my knees helps.

Also, physical therapy has been the best thing for me by far. I end up craving it when I haven't had it for a few days.

I also use a foam roller on my IT band and lower back, which helps.

  • Echoing what's been said above... Massage helps, even if it's just your SO giving you a quick hip massage. I started using a pregnancy pillow and it actually made my hips worse. I've since abandoned it and feel way better. I guess it depends on how your hips/legs are built. A hot pad or water bottle helps when it's super painful too.
  • Thanks everyone. I think I won't take the chance on the snoogle (they're expensive) and try some if these other suggestions. Thanks!

I bought the boppy version of the pregnancy pillow and that has really helped me sleep.  I still get some hip pain during the day, but at least I can sleep better.

  • Going to the chiropractor really has helped me. I didn't see one at all with my first and I was dying from half way on in pain. I tried many pillows and even bought a new mattress. With my second I started seeing a Chiropractor and it made a huge difference. This time, I've had very little pain thus far and when I do, I go in.

You can also try icing it for 10-30 mins at a time before bed and keep your upper leg supported so your hip isn't at a bad angle.
  • I haven't tried a chiropractor but I'll talk to my midwife. During the day when I'm walking around or sitting on chairs it doesn't really bother me. Maybe just a little stiff. But at night it can get really bad. I'll try stretching and putting a pillow under my belly too. I did get a massage yesterday and will keep doing so.
  • I've had this too, and not much helps. I switch sides constantly.

  • In addition to some of the other suggestions, I use a small pillow or my snoggle behind my back so I can sleep at an angle and keep pressure directly off my hip bone.

This happened to me last pregnancy. The snoogle didn't help, pillows didn't help. What did help was a memory foam mattress topper. It made it so much better. I still have it on my bed so this pregnancy hip pain hasn't been an issue.

This time I'm thinking about bringing a foam kneeling pad to the hospital when I deliver because the hospital bed was not comfortable for my hips at all. I ended up rolling over a million times because the lip I was lying on was always painful. I guess it might have helped the meds in the epi spread evenly.

  • DH rubs my hips and heating pads help, but I haven't found anything else in the middle of the night.

  • Had it bad with my first two. Nothing seemed to help! I have been spared the hip pain this time around for now thankfully. I have no advice just I've been through it and can empathize. Best of luck!
  • Sorry you're dealing with this, but no advice here because I've got the same issue. My days aren't bad, but nights are super painful because of the hips. I just told my husband last night that I can't wait for the LO to arrive because the little sleep I get will be more restful!
  • Sorry for all you guys who are experiencing this too! I used to love sleeping.... now not so much.
  • Yeah it gets worse and worse near the end. With my first two, I was turning so many times at night to try and get some relief.
I remember after delivery, the biggest relief was being able to lay on my back again!!

  • I've had some hip pain today in my left hip only. In the joint part, when I move around. Not super painful yet but I could see it progressing. I'm sleeping ok at night. Other than waking up 4 times to pee... But sleeping isn't painful.

  • I should add that I try to lay on my back for 10-15 minutes before falling asleep and when I wake up. It helps the ache.

  • I move to the couch half way through the night so that I can lean against pillow backs to alleviate some of the pressure.
