hello!!! sorry it has been a while since I have been on, my husband and I have been doing research on different agency's in Illinois that do the FTA other then our state (DCFS) agency, and I think we have picked one. now I have a few questions about how to do some stuff. we have decided we would like to try to do under 1yr old. how did you girls that did the baby route with FTA buy things to prepare for your placement?? (ie-cloths, crib) Also did any of you have a adoption shower once u were licensed?? one last question if any of you have younger nieces and nephews how did you explain it to them what was going on, me and my DH are really close to our nephew(6yrs) and don't know how to explain what we are doing he understands that his mom got pregnant and had his sister so we don't know what to tell him and what to do if the baby does back home?? We just weren't sure what we were to do about that so if any of you can help with that that would be awesome!!!

We are currently waiting for DIA, so I can answer the questions for me. They obviously could be different for you.
1. We have purchased a few things. We got a crib from DH's boss, and one crib sheet so far. We also have a car seat. I have slowly started collecting things as I see them on sale or at consignment.
2. We plan to have a baby shower after our placement.
3. I teach second grade, and I plan giving my students a general definition of adoption. Similar to what you would say to your own child about his/her adoption. I wanted a baby to love, but I couldn't grow it in my own stomach... Along those lines
We are doing FTA in Wisconsin and came home with a three-week old this past July as our first placement. For our licensing we had to have a crib and car seat...turns out we had to buy a new car seat because out little gal was under 5 pounds when we brought her home. Honestly we didn't have too much...swaddling blankets, bottle drying rack. We were able to pick her up from the hospital and the NICU gave us a bunch of bottles that we used until she was into larger bottles. They gave us some diapers and ointment that gave us a day or two to be able to run out to Target for the right size after placement. We were lucky enough to have been given a swing from my MIL that was a blessing the first night home...and many days since!
My mom and MIL threw us a shower for E after placement, which was perfect...gave us sometime to figure things out and register...since we wouldn't have known what to register for prior since we could have had anywhere from 0 - 18 months.
We are doing a DIA for a newborn up to 1 year old.
My family threw me a shower already. I am a planner and once were were actively waiting, I wanted to make sure that we had the necessities right away because you never know when you are going to be matched/picked. Of course my shower had to be gender neutral, but I was okay with that because we just wanted the necessities. We have a crib, blankets, crib sheets, etc. Actually the nursery is about done too. And I have the car seat. The diaper bag is about packed and ready to go also. Like I said, I'm a planner.
Hope this helps. Everyone is different. Good luck in your process!
