Cloth Diapering

Day #8 of The Rash (PIP) Sorry, it's long...

I need help with our rash!

P was coming home a little red from daycare, so I was thinking wetness sensitivity (we send BB with stay dry inserts). They change every 3-ish hours. Not ideal, but it seemed reasonable. Then late last week the rash turned bright red and dry, like a carpet burn in the front of her diaper area, and not so much on her genitals. I changed a damp diaper last Saturday and it smelled faintly of ammonia, so I treated all my BB inserts and TTs for ammonia (some hot water washes-no detergent, strip with RLR, then a bleach wash, then many more hot water washes). The rash seemed to be getting a tiny bit better a few days ago, but now it's morphed into something else. Now it's mostly on her legs and sort of looks like wetness sensitivity. We and daycare have been slathering her with CJs, Grandma Els, and CJ Plus, changing frequently, etc.

I have so many theories, but no real idea. Could DC not be totally drying her out before putting a new diaper on, has she eaten anything new recently? Oh DC has also tried disposables for 3 days, and it doesn't clear at all.

What's my next step?:
-have DC keep a food log (she's only sensitive to cows milk that we know of, and this seems to be improving);
-have DC use cloth wipes and water;
-take her to the Dr?

I'm stumped. This is what it looked like last night after a bath (oh we've done baking soda baths too).

    Although M got a bit of a rash that looked somewhat like that right along the elastic of one of her ON diapers. It was just one diaper and never got worse, but it took surprisingly long to heal up (over a week, maybe 2). I can only guess that something got into the elastic (undissolved detergent maybe) and irritated her. In that case I found that coconut oil and CJs helped more than Grandma El's because her skin needed nourishment not so much the wetness barrier.

    This happened to my DD too. It took a while to clear up and it was right along the elastic line. But I used CJs and did some hot water washes to try and get rid of anyhing that might have been lingering in one of the folds of the diaper and she's been fine since.

  • Thanks for your input. I was wondering if it's an elastic thing too; like maybe she's getting bigger so the snap configuration we've been using is holding wetness against her skin really tightly. We use TTs at night, but I've made sure to use only turned diapers the last two nights, because the serging can be a little stiff and rougher, I think.

    It does look a bit better this morning. When she woke up at 3:30 I decided to use that as an opportunity to put her in a new TT so she wouldn't be in the same one from 8p-7a.

    I'll see if we can't clear it up this weekend now that all the diapers are stripped and it doesn't look so much like an ammonia burn. It's reassuring to hear that other leg rashes took as long to heal. So far we've never met a rash we couldn't heal up in just a few hours to one day, so this one is frustrating to me!
