Is this normal?

So recently I feel like Hannah has been drinking A LOT!! Especially water. Like it's gotten to the point that the past few nights she has woken up in the middle of the night crying asking for water. Like waking up two to three times asking for water, or b/c of all the water she drank all day with a massively wet diaper.

My hubby is wondering if their is a problem, like maybe diabetes. I know one of the symptoms is excessive drinking of water and then peeing a lot b/c of all the water.

OR do kids this age just drink a lot? I have no frame of reference here. For those on mobile she is 21 months old.

I can't give you a quantity of water, I don't really keep track b/c she is funny with drinks. She'll have like 3-4 different containers or sippy cups full of water that she'll drink out of on any given day. Like if I have a cup with my lunch she also has to have a cup. Then she's got her downstairs sippy, and upstairs one. Like literally I've seen her have 3 different types of cups at the table. (that would be hubby giving her so many options, all filled with water lol) I mean she is drinking milk, but not that much anymore. But it's the waking up at night crying for water that has me concerned. Suggestions? Alternatives? Should I make an appointment?

I know that excessive thirst as well as weight loss and excessive hunger can also be signs of type 1 diabetes. Does she have any of those other symptoms? If she does, I'd take her in. If not...you could always wait until her 2 yr appt.

FWIW my DS is 3 and he is constantly waking up in the middle of the night for water. I leave a cup by his bed but he always finishes it and wants more.

Hopefully it's nothing but normal toddlerdom!

Her weight gain is good and she seems to eat a lot but I think it's pretty normal eating. But there was a time she was eating like a horse, but she grew like an inch in a half in a month. So I think that was related.

Glad your son also drinks at night, that is reasurring.

Grayson is almost 2 1/2 and drinks a lot of water. He only has water and milk. He definitely asks for a lot of water right before bed, but so far hasn't woken up for it. I would probably ask the pedi about it if it continues and you are concerned. Hopefully it's nothing!

I would ask at her appt just in case. But I think they tested E's glucose at her 2 year automatically. Hopefully it's nothing.

A is 19 months and she drinks a ton! Like Cwhit said, if there's weight loss and constant eating/hunger and she's been very tired, then she needs to see a doc ASAP.

Almost 21 months and she has started asking for water in middle of night, she does drink it, but I was feeling like it was more of a delay tactic, because she also asks for all her stuffed animals and books and toys...she pretty much asks for water all the time, I don't track how much she takes in either though. Same for us with multiple sippy cups and a toddler water bottle for the park constantly around.
