Boss with a seriously BIG mouth!

So I informed my boss yesterday that we were in the process of trying for baby #2.
The only reason I shared this with her is because we had a couple people leave our department and are short staffed and their really is no one to cover when I need days off for the ER and ET.

She was wonderful and worked with me on my schedule, so I left work happy last night.
However today after a meeting one of my co-workers comes up to me and says she is excited for me, confused I asked her what she was talking about. "Oh that you are doing in-vitro for a baby, I think it is great"

I feel that it is so inappropriate for my boss to have shared something so personal and confidential!

How would you ladies handle this?

Where do you work?  (What type of place?)  Because that is totally against the law to share protected health information about an employee with another employee.  Not only would I be livid with my boss, but I would also be shocked that the other employee even brought it up.  Do they have a relationship of some sort?  Who else has the boss told?  I would be so mad.

Not that you should have to, but did you tell your boss to keep it private?

Totally unacceptable.   I would be livid.  Who is she to discuss your personal conversation with others within the office?  So not cool.

I work in the administrative office of a post secondary school, we are privately owned and pretty small and we actually do not have a "HR" department. It is known that all of the "bosses" talk amongst themselves about the rest of the employees. Needless to say it is not the most professional places at times.

I did not tell my boss to keep it private, I really did not think that she would talk about it with any one else.

It is just so frustrating that I had to tell them in the first place and not just be one of those couples that has sex and 3 months later can tell people they are pregnant.

It is a fairly small office and everyone is pretty candid with each other. But I don't hang out with any of them outside of work. I am still in kind of shock that it was discussed.

I would be livid and if they are a candid group of people I would definitely tell my boss that this was unacceptable. So sorry this happened -it's not right!

I would definitely tell your boss you are shocked that people are coming up to you about your personal business. I would explain that it is never an easy process which is why we don't share this with just anyone. I would appreciate all my personal information kept strictly between us. The only reason you told her was out of respect for covering your job.

That is terrible!!! I'm with the others that I would be livid! I hope you might be able to talk with your boss and let them know that was inappropriate to have shared that information, and like @mcgeeva said the only reason that it was shared was out of respect for covering your position when you have to be at appointments.

Sorry I have been M.I.A.  My parent's came to visit and this weekend was a whirl wind
I did have a talk with my boss and told her that I was upset that something so personal was shared with a co-worker.
She apologized and said that she thought I was open with everyone and it came up in the flow of conversation (as ivf so often does???)
Luckily for her she has been great about the days I need off for ER otherwise I may consider filing a complaint.
Thanks for the support ladies, it helps to not feel so alone during all of this.
