Lump or clogged duct?

edited October 2014 in May 2014 Moms
I felt kind of a lump in my breast this morning while nursing DD. What does a clogged duct feel like? I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before this week, but it doesn't hurt, doesn't feel warm, nothing. It's about the size of a chickpea, so it seems kind of big for a breast lump to show up out of nowhere. I think I'll call my Ob tomorrow, but I don't want to sound like a fool. How did you know you had a clogged duct?

  • I'm not sure if I've had one officially but a hot bath and hand expressing has gotten rid of what you have described for me.

  • Good thanks for the advice. Wish I had time for a hot bath, that sounds wonderful. Last time I asked DH to watch the kids so I could take a bath I ended up with DD1 jumping in 5min into it! I'll try to massage it out.

  • @Lissiehoya‌ could you feel a difference between the abscess and clogged ducts? You really got dealt a super crappy BFing experience btw, glad things are finally going well for you!

Fwiw, I woke up one morning with a painful armpit...after searching I found a small lump.  The pain got worse and worse and I started feeling flu-ish.  I got an antibiotic from my OB for mastitis, but the lump stayed there.  The pain went away, but the lump was still there...

my OB said that sometimes after having an infection like mastitis a lump will form (especially the one where mine was in the armpit) from all of the bacteria and such that travels through the nipple from baby's icky slobbery face and mouth and often times they don't go away until after you've weaned.

Not sure if you've had a recent infection of the boob sort and it could be something similar or not, but I just wanted to share that with you as well!

  • Thanks @ns1‌. I haven't had any pain/illness but good to know for future reference!
