Names Ruined by Media

Another post reminded me of all the names that have ruined for us by books, movies, etc .. so thought I'd start a post - list the name and how it was ruined

Isabelle/Isabella - Twilight! Ugh!
Anastacia - stupid 50 shades of gray! I loved that name (I also loved the movie about the princess) and stupid book had to ruin that name for me!

Oh, and my grandmother was Adele, so that would have been on the short list.

Emma.  As soon as Monica uttered the name on Friends I figured it was over.  I don't want my kid to have a too-too popular name, so that the teacher has to identify her by her last initial.

"No, I wasn't speaking to you, Emma S.  I was speaking to Emma J.... no, no, the OTHER Emma J."  Booooo!

Not that it's one I was thinking of, but I've heard Skyler mentioned a few times.  All I can think about is meth (Breaking Bad).

The name we've chosen for a boy is Elliott. My mom doesn't like it because she says it makes her think is Eliot Spitzer.

Not one that we would've chosen either but as soon as I read Skyler I thought the same thing, lol.  H and I do joke about using Flynn as a boy nickname for a completely unrelated real name.

I loved the name Cadence, then I watched My Little Pony with DD. Nope can't name a kid after a pony lol

this reminded me of the Bachelor lol when they have the initials on the screen. "Kelly S. the dental assistant"

Probably nothing you need to worry about, but Elliott always  reminds me of the following scene from the 80's movie, The Sure Thing:

Incidentally, I think this scene also ruined Nick for me.

I also feel like Lily is starting to be overused. Not sure if that is from HIMYM or not tho.

Allegra. It's been my fave girl name forever.  

It would still be under consideration, though (if a girl). Since the drug patents started to expire last year (yes, I looked that up!), it's possible it may just fade away. But after reading this thread I'm thinking that's unlikely, given the ET, Titanic and Forrest Gump references!

DH and I also both like Sophia. Until I found out it was the most popular girl name last year.

Huh - Would you look at that?  So, now Sophia is out for me for girls and Noah is out for me for boys.  

It's not that I need a totally unique name.  I just don't want my kid to be what Brian and Heather were when I was in grammar school.

I can't think of a name that's been ruined for me via TV but if you wanna talk students.... I have a book full! Lol. I never really thought of Carter as a girls name but after being addicted to Finding Carter on MTV I really like Carter for a girl and my first name is Carlee so it kinda ties in to my name which is what I want to do if it's a girl. DH isn't feeling it though. :-/

Mason. I loved the name Mason before we even started trying for a baby. And ever since Kourtney Kardashian named her son Mason, its become way too popular. There are 2 in DS's daycare class alone!

I've always liked my unique name. The questions/attention can sometimes be challenging given I'm pretty private, but it always gave me a little, secret feeling of being special.

I didn't meet someone IRL with my same first name until about 5 years ago. (and that's the reason I've never posted my name on TB)

Agree with you @AMShark‌ I have a name that's been very popular for many years (Emily) and while my parents say it wasn't as popular when they named me there was always another one or two in my class. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I totally agree with the Dexter comment,

Also for Sophia it's a Disney princess name as well.

We named DD Hannah, I was a bit afraid people would make Hannah Montana references but so far only one person has, everybody else has said how it was such a beautiful and wonderful name.

So sometimes if you really like a name and explain why you like it,  people just like it too.

Although I had a friend who named her daughter Raven, me and my cousin kept saying "That's so Raven" all the time and my friend was like "I don't get it" lol

@Ducky719‌ on the up side no one ever misspells it and it has a great nickname! I think Emma has surpassed it so maybe the popularity will go down this year

@auburnmamma My husband insists that Dexter won't be an issue, because kids that same age as our kid won't have watched the show...but their parents have! It's on our list but I'm fighting back.

Dexter is on our list for a boy (baby #2 hopefully) so is Christian. Ha

Sophie makes me think of the giraffe.

I still like the name Christian too, it was on our boy short list so if we somehow end up with 2 sons it might make the cut, 50 shades or not :-)

FYI My name is Stacy and it's short for Anastasia-if you'd like to avoid using the longer version ;-)

I love that nickname! Imma ask my dh and see what he says - unfortunately, he already knows a Stacey from when they grew up but she lives in another state, so hopefully this name can be put back on the list!
