? About milk vs solids

hey all! So Kahlan is taking solids really well but she is still nursing 9-10 times a day. We're going to try to start adding more solids in (like snacks). How many times a day is LO nursing or how many ounces is LO taking?

I feel like I'll never be able to wean.

Re: ? About milk vs solids

  • I feel like C is feeding a lot too. I switched to FF during the day, which has helped. She nurses when she wakes up and again before morning nap. Then usually has 3 6oz bottles throughout the day and nurses before bed and again if she wakes up at night. So 6-7 feedings, in addition to solids. She doesn't eat much of her solids even when she's really hungry, but there are still only 2 teeth on the bottom. That may be why she wants more milk.

  • Until they are over one, they still should be getting the majority of their calories from breastmilk or formula.

DD2 nurses maybe ever 3-4 hours. No idea how much she gets but I think at daycare she takes about 4oz every 4 hours or so. I give her solids for lunch and dinner (just whatever we are eating).

Oh I don't plan on giving her more solids than milk, I just am overwhelmed with her eating as much as she is and still wanting to nurse every two hours. Last night we were lucky with only two wake ups but, basically I'm afraid to not feed her at night anymore and then needing to nurse 9 times during the times she's awake. So in 13 hours.
  • DS gets 32oz/day (four 8oz bottles).  For solids, breakfast is usually oatmeal, lunch is usually a 4oz pouch of fruit/veggies.  Dinner is another puree and/or easy table food (potatoes, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, meatloaf, pasta, yogurt, etc) with puffs or cheese as a snack.  He has been doing more table food at the sitter lately, which sometimes replaces his oatmeal or puree during the day.

  • @mhc11 I'm in the exact same boat. I've gotten her to take about 3 oz from a sippy a couple times but it's really unreliable. I love nursing but am ready to have a life again.
  • LO eats about 5 8oz bottles in a 24 hour period. Give or take. That's 40oz. We tried purees-won't eat them. Tried real food- she just plays and won't eat. And if she does eat it, it's only a couple bites. I'm trying to give her more food but she doesn't seem interested. This is so different from DS. He ate baby food and a ton of it. By one when we switched to milk he ate 3 cups a day. I have no clue what do to with LO. Once we start cows milk, she will need to eat real food too.

I really do love breastfeeding but having to pretty much be attached to my baby 24/7 is just too much for me at this point. I'm literally counting the days down till 12/17.
Exactly. I plan on starting to wean at one year. She needs to be weaned by March.
  • K is all about solids but still gets about 24 oz of formula a day. His pedi said he's good BC he's getting more than the minimum on formula and that as he's getting closer to one he should be eating more solids.
  • LO nurses 5-6x plus eats 3 full meals and some snacks.

If/when she gets a pumped bottle it's usually 4oz and she seems content with that, sometimes it's 5oz. I'm guessing she takes in about 24ish oz of BM a day.

  • E is all about the solids and water but has two really good nursing sessions (when he wakes up and goes to bed) and then he nurses when going down for his two naps but part of it is just pacifing. He eats 3 meals plus some snacks in between

  • Thanks guys. I think I'm just tired and am ready to sleep more than 2 or 3 hours in a row and am afraid I won't see the end of it any time soon.
  • My LO still nurses 6-7 times in addition to solids. I am scared to wean too!
