Colic at 3 months?

DS is 3 months, and recently he's had a couple of nights where we get him to sleep, and then about an hour later he wakes up screaming inconsolably. The screaming and crying will then last 1-3 hrs. We will change his diaper, I try to feed him even though he will want nothing to do with food during the screaming. We've tried gripe water and gas drops. I think he eventually just tires himself out and ends up falling asleep. He will pass a lot of gas during this time. He's never had anything like this up until this point, and I feel terrible that I can't console him and calm him down. He's EBF, and I haven't added or taken away anything from my diet recently that I think would affect him. Anyone go through something similar with their LO. From doing some reading it sounds like it might be colic, but I thought that babies tended to outgrow colic by three months, not start it.

Re: Colic at 3 months?

  • Could it be a wonder week?
  • @jnnfrrose6‌ he's 14 weeks, I thought we were pass the 12 week wonder week, but I guess he could still be in it! I've noticed big changes in him developmentally. He's reaching for toys now, and pretty close to rolling over. Since the crying doesn't happen every night, it could possibly be the wonder week and not colic. I'm really hoping it stops soon though. Last night I cried right along with him. It stinks not to know how to help them when they get that way!

  • This might be helpful to understand wonder weeks and development and fussiness. You're in a storm momma!
  • @cookiemomma14‌ thank you for the chart. It's good to know, and frightening all at the same time lol

  • Wonder week, 3 month growth spurt, early 4 month regression.  DD regressed right before 3 months (she'd wake every hour after a 8-11 stretch) and I think it was a combo of the 3 month growth spurt and early onset 4 month regression.  Things are just now starting to get a little better.

  • That chart scares me @cookiemomma14‌! And I'm dreading the storm that's coming up!! He's already pretty fussy so hopefully it doesn't get worse! Yikes!!

It scares me too, but helpful to expect what's ahead and not think I'm going crazier than I feel from the lack of sleep.
  • J had colic from about 3 weeks until around 2.5 months. He would literally scream for 3-5 hours a night. As soon as 5pm hit, screaming. Inconsolable screaming until he either passed out or by some miracle the 9037382738 things we did each night to comfort him would finally fall into place and work. There would be weeks where we had a few days reprieve, but never longer than 2 or 3 days between until just after 2 months when the time stretched out and finally tapered off completely.

My money is on a wonder week. Typically, thankfully, colic is done and over with by this point.

  • Wonder Weeks says the next leap starts at 14 1/2 wks through 19 1/2 weeks. The regression and unpleasantness starts at 14ish weeks and the leap will happen at the end of the cloudy period.

L still has colic and is almost 15wks. We use Colic Calm and once a day probiotics. The probiotics help him the most.

  • Babies really have the uncanny ability to be the best and the absolute worst at the same time, don't they?
  • I appreciate all of the feedback. I think I'm definitely seeing the beginnings of the long wonder week phase. Tonight was more of the same at bedtime. He was such a good sleeper up until 11-12 weeks, so it stinks to be in this regression, fussiness period, but it is pretty fun to see all of the new things he's learning!

  • Could it possibly be teething? DD is not a crying/fussy baby AT ALL unless her teeth are bugging her. She's been drooling like a St. Bernard for about a month now and will put EVERYTHING in her mouth (besides teething toys of course). When they really bug her she will be fast asleep and will scream bloody murder the second I lay her down due to the pressure it creates. I know it's not exactly the same as what you're going through, but it could be another idea of what's going on with your LO!
