Pregnant after IF

How many ultrasounds have you had done?

This wasn't really on my radar of worry topics until somone posted about it on my BMB. A few fellow PAIFers responded to her along with myself that we've had more than the usual number of ultrasounds done thanks to infertility clinics. But I suppose it did get me wondering how many ultrasounds most people have had done. I had 2 with the RE at 6 and 8 and then one at 11 due to major cramping and a little spotting. I am scheduled for my regular one tomorrow, but I suppose now this girl has me feeling paranoid. I was told last week by the tech it's safe to have another this week, but now I'm finding conflicting articles on Google. Would love opinions and feedback.

Re: How many ultrasounds have you had done?

  • I did a lot of reading on this, too, especially as I had about five ultrasounds in the first eight weeks. What I read showed that there was a teeny tiny risk if you're doing a lot of them and they last a while, but even still the risk is TINY. It is a good reminder that even the anxious moms probably don't want to do a bunch unnecessarily.

Cross this off the worry list. :)

  • I really wouldn't hold much faith in what that girl said, the person that told her ultra sounds were bad also doesn't want her to see any Dr's. I'd trust what your Dr and tech are telling you.

I've had 5 so far and I'm having another Tuesday and I'm just 8 weeks. I'm sure I'll have a few more by the times it's all said and done.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • A lot of people on that thread also said it's fine and her MIL is crazy and extreme.  Don't worry about it.

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN

    Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
    Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)
  • I know several friends who had high risk pregnancies that ended up having literally dozens of ultrasounds and their children are all fine. Anecdotal, to be sure, but ultrasounds have been around long enough that if there were a serious concern, it would have plenty of evidence by this point.

    I say don't sweat it.

We had one at 7w and 9w with the RE, then the OB did one at 11w with their cheapo portable u/s (they don't have to bill insurance). Then again at 13w with the cheapo again. Then 19w with the fancy 3D one for my a/s. Then 24w for a cervical check (both a transvaginal and 3D belly u/s). So I guess I have had 6 so far, and probably at least 1 more before birth.

  • I definitely wouldn't worry about it. With this pregnancy, I had 6 or 7 in my first tri and my a/s this week. With my DS, I had around the same amount. Everything turned out just fine with him. Neither my RE nor my OB seemed concerned about any risks from additional u/s.

  • I had 2 at from my RE, and so far I've had 4 with my OB. I have another one coming up in 2 weeks. I'm not worried about it at all, I trust my doctors. I am now having to be seen every 2 weeks for being semi high risk bc of my hbp history before pg. A bonus, the ultrasounds always give me comfort in being able to see our baby girl, it's such a relief and I'm always looking forward to it :)

  • I'm 12w5d and I've had 5 scans so far: 3 with my RE, 1 for my first OB appt, and 1 with my OB after a spotting scare.  All of the scans were brief (especially the last one), and I trust my doctors not to do anything that creates un-due risk.

I'm scheduled for my NT scan this week, and I'll be getting scans every 4 weeks - possibly more as it gets closer to my due date.  I think this is higher than average, but pretty standard for being pregnant with twins.

Don't let other people transfer their anxieties to you.  Like PP have said, this is so low on my list of worries, I can't even see it.

  • I love this group of women! A lot more relevant info to me vs. some of the info from the BMBs.

I had 4 u/s before being released from the RE. As this pregnancy progressed, I've had the NT scan, anatomy scan, and three others to follow up on issues.

And again, as PP said, we've had so many more interventions to get here as PAIFers that an u/s is not on my radar of worries.

Dr Google is actually not a real doctor ;-)

You can find articles telling you broccoli is dangerous if you really tried. Think about all the IVFers, all the high risk pregnancy people, and all the people that do 3d/4d scans. If it was dangerous, there would be hard evidence to support it. You're perfectly fine :)

You don't even have to look very hard...

And look, "Medicaldaily.com" even looks like a reputable link!

Apparently too much raw broccoli can cause thyroid issues...

Ultrasounds were new technology when my mom was a pregnant nurse at an ob's office. She was the guinea pig and had them weekly and I turned out just fine... Ignore the eye twitch! I had 5 from my RE and then 3 more before 19 weeks with OB and MFM. I'll have at least 2 more before all is said and done. Enjoy the extra peeks at your baby!

  • I heard something about this early on in my pregnancy but I know that its a very tiny risk. If it caused harmful exposure it wouldn't be used at all. But I really have lost count of how many I've had this pregnancy... probably about 9. My RE did early frequent monitoring, I think he just wants to catch anything abnormal as soon as possible. I say don't worry at all and enjoy your U/S :-)
