Dentist

Have you taken your toddler to the dentist?
I asked the pedi at Ty's appt yesterday about his broken tooth. She told me to take him to a pediatric dentist just to be safe. It's broken off pretty far and she doesn't know if there's a risk of it getting infected or if it needs a cap. I can't imagine the appt going well. How do you convince a 1yr old to keep their mouth open and let the dentist put their hand in there?!
I wouldn't even have thought about taking Ty to the dentist till he was atleast 2 had he not chipped a tooth. @atlvol‌ and I were texting last night and were wondering what the recommended age is to take your kid to the dentist for the first time?

Re: Dentist

  • I read that it was when they turned one or got thier first tooth.

DD went for the first time on Weds. She has three teeth. The hygienist brushed her teeth with the buffing machine and the dentist put fluoride on her teeth and just looked in her mouth at things. The lady did say she will cry I am OK with it if you are. DD did cry and fought. I had her sit in the chair with me in front and held her racoon paws down. The dentist just shoved his finger in her mouth to look at things. The whole thing lasted maybe 5 mins.

DD got a tooth brush and a rubber ducky afterwards and all was fine.

  • I think we'll bring T around 18 mos, starting to look around for pediatric dentist recommendations now.

  • We went in August, because she has a slight discoloration on a front tooth. The ped dentist put a flouride treatment on it and wants us to do that every 3 months.

We plan to get a second opinion at a new office when it's time for the next treatment.

But to answer your question, I held her on my lap, with her legs around me, laid her head back on my knees and held her hands, then the dentist sat facing me and looked in her mouth (her knees were also at LO's head). They had a TV on the ceiling with MMCH playing, so that helped, but she pretty much cried the whole time. :((

They also told us that the "new" recommendations are for kids to go before they are 1 so that any dental issues can be treated with prevention if possible.

Good luck where ever you end up going!
  • Thanks ladies. Ty has already gotten a fluoride treatment on his teeth at his 12 month and 15 month dr appt. He hated that!
My pedi recommended I take him to children's hospital dentistry.
I'm hoping it is just a fluke and it broke off because he fell on something and not that he has weak teeth.
  • We just went this week. They looked at his teeth, did a cleaning, and a fluoride treatment. It wasn't as bad as I imagined. P was very cooperative.
  • Thanks for asking @andrea0418‌ I'm headed to the dentist next week. I'll ask him for a rec. :D

Side note- I hate the dentist :((
  • I never hated the dentist until recently. I've never had a cavity, braces, anything till this summer. Booo for cavities.
  • Our pediatrician said to take Feli at 12 months. She didn't really enjoy it, but it was over in under 5 minutes. One of the moms in my playgroup has a 16 month old who already had four cavities, so better safe than sorry, I guess.

  • I'm sorry I missed this! Poor Ty! I asked my dentist earlier this year and was told the sooner the better. Not because it's necessary, but because it can help the little ones get used to the idea.
