Naps - I'm Desperate

For the past week, DS has pretty much given up naps. It started on Monday. Despite my efforts to keep him awake, he fell asleep in the car for 15 on the way home before lunch. He refused to nap that day, but that is pretty typical if he gets a cat nap. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and today, he didn't nap at all in the morning but still refused to go to sleep at nap time. On Thursday he went down just fine. He is constantly telling me he is tired and gets horrible to be around so I know he needs it. I try tucking him in several times. I have tried rocking him to sleep (something I haven't done for almost two years) and even put him in our bed with me. Nothing works. With the new baby coming in three months, I absolutely refuse to give up nap time. Any suggestions?

P.S. I am no longer your friend if you tell me his days of napping are over. :-)

Re: Naps - I'm Desperate

  • No input, just company for your misery. DD has given up naps too. We're going on 2 weeks with only 1 nap in there and the nap was one night where she passed out at 6 and then was hell to get to bed later that night. It sucks, 3 weeks ago I was having some success laying down in my bed with her pretending to go to sleep and she'd drift off sometimes, now that doesn't work and I haven't found a solution. Let me know if you do!

  • We're going through this too for the past month. Usually at least 2 days a week she won't nap. I still put her in bed for at least an hour to rest. She has definitely been needing more awake time between wakeup and nap, and between nap and bedtime. Her whole schedule has shifted later, but I've just been going with the late bedtime and wakeup because the time change is coming soon anyway. Hoping that gets her back on a better schedule.

  • Ever since we started sleeping in late she doesn't nap. I'm fine with it too because I know she's getting enough at night. I'm just worried about when the new baby comes how it's going to go with having her up while I'm trying to get the new baby down and how much I'll wish I could nap with her. Our days of sleeping in are numbered so maybe she'll go back to wanting a nap then too. One can only hope  ;)

  • Mine went though that and are now back to napping, hoping same goes for you

  • Thank you for the encouragement. The past two days he has gone down fine. I swear it is because it is the weekend, though. He sleeps so much better when DH is home. I joke (kindof) that DS does it out of spite so DH won't believe my stories. We will see how this week goes.
  • To get mine to nap, we have to leave the house on the morning so she gets enough stimulation. I stopped calling it naptime because that always ended in a fight. Now she has quiet time and knows she is allowed to play in her room, read, or sleep. Without fail, she'll play for a while and then within 20 minutes put herself into bed and conk out for a couple hours. Maybe try taking the pressure off so it stops being a control issue? If he spends a lot of time playing with your dh or you do more on the weekends, he might be napping easier then becaise he is more tired.

  • Have you tried physically exhausting him?  I know it's not naps but DS is a horrible sleeper at night but sleeps much better if we take him to the playground after dinner until dark.   I know it's kind of a pain but if we want to guarantee we sleep well we have to really exhaust him.
