More spotting with twins?

Newbie here!
After a M/C in March, we were thrilled to find out we were pregnant again last month!!
Because of my previous experience, I went in for a U/S at 7w2d. Twins! With strong heartbeats!!

Now, for the past week, I've had light to dark brown spotting every day.

I went to doctor on Monday again. Baby A had a heart rate of 175, and Baby B was 171. No signs of anything wrong. They put me on two weeks pelvic rest.

But, my Pgal brain has been in overdrive. Googling has come up with brown spotting, and spotting in general, is very common in twin pregnancies. Still, I worry.

Have any of you experienced this? What was advised for you?

Thanks!!

Re: More spotting with twins?

  • I bled a lot in 1st tri due to a couple subchorionic hemmorhages (SCH) & also spotting after sex. Colors ranged from brown to pink to orange to gushing bright red. Never affected babies but was super scary.

  • Thanks. I think they were looking for evidence of SCH, but nothing was showing up on the tests. I'm trying to relax, but it's definitely scary. Maybe it's just a sensitive cervix or the babies are nesting. I'll be 9w tomorrow.
  • I've had some sort of spotting pretty much my whole pregnancy. Usually just a slight residual tan, but it has been brown and pink at times too. I didn't have any such thing with my singleton.... but no one can ever find anything wrong whenever I am checked out so I just figure it's my own weird normal. I will be 31 weeks tomorrow.

I had heavy, bright red bleeding at 12 weeks, and everything turned out fine. I did try to take it easy and strict bed rest was never prescribed.  It is so terrifiying. I'm sorry you are having this scare and I hope everything progresses normally. Remember you are stretching and growing quickly with two babies in there. Pgal brain is the worst, but two strong heart beats is a great sign.  Take care.

  • I had spotting at 6 weeks and again at 7 weeks, I ran to Dr, they did ultrasound, told me it was 'old blood' - was brown and not to worry unless it was bright red, gushing out and cramping with it. Was put on bed rest both weeks for 3 days, spotting stopped and all was well.

  • Thank you, ladies! The spotting is slowly changing from dark to light brown, so I think that's a good sign! No real cramps or anything, just some round ligament pain every now and then. I have one more week of pelvic rest, so I'm hoping the spotting will just continue to get lighter. My next appt is on the 28th. I can't wait to see the little beans again!!
  • Thank you!! About how long did the spotting last? It's been about a week for me, and after letting up a bit this weekend, it came back last night. So tough to relax! The. 28th can't come soon enough!
  • I spotted over the weekend and again on Tuesday.  After going in for a sonogram- and finding out I was having TWINS?!  I spotted again the next day.  I of course called back- and they said that it happens to 50% of women during the first trimester; and once it's happened once, it likely to happen again.

As long as its not a change in the amount and you aren't soaking a pad, its probably nothing to worry about.

That being said, if you haven't called your OB about it, then you should let them know.
