Anyone have experience with Cervidil??

So I hit 41 weeks today & looks like this little guy is a little too comfortable because the only progress I've made so far is my cervix has thinned about half way. So Monday night I get checked into the hospital to get Cervidil & then Tues morning they will start Pitocin if nothing has happened over night. Was just curious if anyone had any experience with this? Did it help at all?

Thanks in advance for any insight ladies & loving all the birth stories & pictures :) Turned into a major lurker/love titer the past months. Just too dang tired to keep up with things early enough to get a comment in

Re: Anyone have experience with Cervidil??

  • Hi- I have totally not posted on this board before but that was my exact situation with my DD 4 years ago.  I was a week overdue and my doc admitted me and I got Cervidil- then induction began the next morning.

It was slow going for me at first- I started on Pitocin around 6am and didn't make much progress and around noon my dr. was finally able to break my water since the head had descended enough.  After my water broke things got going and I delivered at 9:30pm that evening.  I have no idea what impact if any the Cervidil had but my Dr. told me after he was convinced that if I hadn't had it I would have ended up needing a C-section.

If I had it to do again I would do it again- Good luck!

  • I wasn't dilated at all with dd, and had to do the foley bulb, cervidil and pit. It helped. I ended up getting to 8cm, but after 44 hours of labor it ended with a c-section. It works differently for everyone :)

  • My induction with DD last year began with Cervidil. Twelve hours after getting it, I had dilated to 1cm. However, after another 12 hours of the highest doses of Pitocin allowed, I only progressed to 6cm, so I'm probably not the best example.

  • Thanks ladies. I had just never heard of it before my doc started talking to me about it yesterday. Fingers crossed it helps because this little one need to get his butt out soon

  • My induction began with cervidil. I was 1 cm and 50% effaced before it went in and it progressed me only a little to about 2 cm and 70%.

I'm probably not the best example, though, because my induction lasted over 96 hours and ultimately ended in a c-section.

    Hopefully your experience is better!

  • I had cervadil on Monday night and it only took me from .5 cm to 1 cm after 12 hours. I didn't feel any contractions with it. My doctor then used cytotec which caused me to have contractions and my water to break this avoiding pitocin altogether. My doctor said cervadil doesn't work for everyone. I did a lot of googling before my induction and saw a mixture of positive and negative stories so like most things your experience will be unique to you.

  • I had two rounds of Cervidil during my induction, and after that I was only dilated to 2cm, but I was 70% effaced and having regular contractions. My OB seemed to think that was good progress.

  • I have never experienced the cervidil myself, but my sister and best friend both had it and they both said it made them really tender. Best of luck to you and I hope everything works out :)
  • I'm not saying cervidil caused all this but after I received it I had a very high temp 101 and then my placenta erupted after getting a epidural at 5 cm. 15 min after getting a epidural at 5 cm I delivered my baby
  • With my first I was induced with cervidil and then pitocin. I started the cervidil around 9am, started pitocin a few hours later and delivered the next morning at 1:30am. It was a very smooth process for me. Good luck.
  • Just had it Monday. Started at 1cm dilated and started med at 1130p. By 3a I was having cramping and back pain. Around 5 it became more intense which they said were mild contractions. Water was broken at 7 and I was 2.5 cm dilated and thinned.
  • I was given cervidil last Monday evening due to being 41 weeks and rising blood pressure. My Dr said it would soften my cervix overnight and we would start pit in the morning. I, apparently, am a rare unicorn because three hours into it. my contractions started. I went from 0 to 10 centimeters in less than ten hours. Water broke on its own when I rolled over in bed after epidural. Dr was shocked when she showed up to start pit and I was almost ready to start pushing. I will say my pushing stage was long and hard- over 2 and 1/2 hours of pushing- and my epi wore off during pushing so I felt everything.

It was uncomfortable when they shoved it up by cervix- prob little worse than pelvic exam. Hopefully you will be a rare unicorn too and it will do more than just soften your cervix!
  • Sounds like the exact same thing that happened to me with my DD. I went in one night and got Cervidil placed in. I was really tender down there after too because the nurse didn't put it high enough. I was supposed to rest and get sleep but it made me so sick I was throwing up all night. Then when they took it out in the morning something happened where they couldn't find the babies heartbeat. Scariest moment ever, lights & alarms were going off and about 10 nurses came flooding into my room. It all turned out okay but I didn't have a good experience with Cervidil. I guess it did it's job and we started pitocin around 10 AM and had a baby around 11PM after breaking my water around 9PM. But I would not want to do Cervidil again.

  • Thank you all for your experience insight. FX that I am a rare unicorn & it all goes smoothly. Even better would be for this little guy to come on his own this weekend but not too much I can do to hurry him up.
